Ärende: pizza 599
=================
ML> Of course, you didn't have to do something. You could have
ML> just gone with 6 toppings or something.
DS> Or as suggested, double down on the pepperoni and sausage. This week
DS> the Ravens also won, but with only one touchdown so it was not really
DS> worth it -- especially so soon after the last one.

I wonder how the local franchises' sales (and profits) are
affected by the fluctuations. I understand that a lot of
the time, the additional costs are borne by the franchises,
even when the promotions are devised and announced by the
parent. Burger King, if I recall, was famous for this kind
of problem.

ML> Mike C. is a committed unionist, but I have never seen him
ML> post anything that didn't have some evidence behind it. He
ML> also is a New Yorker, and Papa John's pizza would not cut
ML> the cake, er, pie, in that territory.
DS> I had never heard of him before -- where is he posting?

Not sure - he was on some of the mailing lists, but I don't
bother with those. He was/is a friend of Carol B.'s.

DS> that practice the sham of restricting their employees to part time so
DS> that they can make them either do without insurance or find insurance
DS> at a higher cost on their own deserve to be shunned.
ML> I know of several companies that do just that.
DS> It is not an uncommon practice, but I still say that I think it is
 DS> despicable.

Certainly despicable as with all manner of cheating and cutting
corners. I didn't mean to imply otherwise.

At one time our daughter in law was subject to exactly
DS> that. She is a physical therapist, and was doing contract work
DS> through an agency -- but was not allowed to work more than 39 hours per
DS> week for exactly that reason.

The labor laws differ by state - in Massachusetts, last time
I worked in such a situation (during graduate school, so almost
40 years ago), coverage had to be provided for those who worked
some lesser number of hours, I think maybe as few as 30.5. Though
the intentions were praiseworthy, the practical effect was that
people who needed more hours and who would have gladly worked 39
hours without benefits were hit with an extra whammy, because they
in fact were limited to working 30 hours or less.

==
ML> I think he's conflating Papa John and Papa Gino, Little Caesar,
ML> and Domino's. Though I am talking about stuff I have only
 ML> modest knowledge of.
 DS> Sounds more like Pizza Hut :-}}

It's been so long since I ate any of those products. I have in
the distant past consorted with people who enjoyed Pizza Hut
and Shakey's but have mostly excised those painful memories.

We had the thin crust one time -- and only
DS> one time. I think that they roll it out cracker thin, and then run a
DS> spiked tool over it to put holes into it. Might even pre-bake it. End
DS> result is closer to a saltine cracker than to any normal pizza dough.
DS> As I said, one trial was more than enough.

Is it touted as a low-carb product, I wonder. One of my favorite
pizzas (yes! I had such at one time) was the green pepper, onion,
and extra cheese (with or without other toppings) at an A&W stand
in Concord NH back in the 1970s. The crust was almost that cracker
thinness but was not at all salty or flaky. Interesting food, and
I can still remember the taste of it washed down with a pint of
root beer (at that time it was advertised as having somethingteen
natural ingredients and one artificial one, vanilla; and the
claim was made that people liked it better with artificial rather
than natural vanilla).

MMMMM----- Recipe via Meal-Master (tm) v8.00

      Title: Rosemary's Root Beer Tonic
 Categories: Beverages, Natural, Vegetarian
      Yield: 4 servings

      3 oz Sassafras Bark, dried
      2 oz Sarsaparilla, dried
      1 oz Dandelion Root, dried
      1 oz Burdock Root, dried
    1/2 oz Ground Ginger
    1/2 oz Ground Cinnamon
    1/4 oz Orange Peel, dried

This sweet, bracing drink from Rosemary Gladstar Slick is reminiscent
of old-fashioned root beer, due to the sassafras. It has a cleansing,
revivifying effect from the dandelion, burdock and sarsaparilla.

Mix together all ingredients and store in a tightly closed container.
In a large pot combine 1 quart of water and 4 tablespoons of dry
mixture. Bring to a boil, cover and simmer for 15 to 20 minutes.
Strain and sweeten with honey or stevia (also called "sweet herb") if
  desired.

  Makes about 4 cups

Variation: For iced tea, chill the simmered mixture, then dilute it
with 1 quart of sparkling water. Serve over ice with a twist of
  orange peel.
