Saw an interesting article this morning at the crack of yawn as I was reading
the NYT synopsis on the RSS feed that my iGoogle page uses to keep me updated
on whassup in the world ... I don't drink Gatorade or Powerade or any of the
"fruit juice drinks" mentioned - but, some here do or might do. And this new
Frankenfood (brominated vegetable oil) is in many other things ...

Drink Ingredient Gets a Look

Sarah Kavanagh and her little brother were looking forward to the bottles of
Gatorade they had put in the refrigerator after playing outdoors one hot, humid
afternoon last month in Hattiesburg, Miss.

A petition on Change.org asks for the removal of brominated vegetable oil from
Gatorade.

But before she took a sip, Sarah, a dedicated vegetarian, did what she often
does and checked the label to make sure no animal products were in the drink.
One ingredient, brominated vegetable oil, caught her eye.

ôI knew it probably wasnÆt from an animal because it had vegetable in the name,
but I still wanted to know what it was, so I Googled it,ö Ms. Kavanagh said. ôA
page popped up with a long list of possible side effects, including
neurological disorders and altered thyroid hormones. I didnÆt expect that.ö

She threw the product away and started a petition on Change.org, a nonprofit
Web site, that has almost 200,000 signatures. Ms. Kavanagh, 15, hopes her
campaign will persuade PepsiCo, GatoradeÆs maker, to consider changing the
drinkÆs formulation.

About 10,000 chemicals are allowed to be added to foods, about 3,000 of which
have never been reviewed for safety by the F.D.A., according to PewÆs research.
Of those, about 1,000 never come before the F.D.A. unless someone has a problem
with them; they are declared safe by a company and its handpicked advisers.

ôI worked on the industrial and consumer products side of things in the past,
and if you take a new chemical and put it into, say, a tennis racket, you have
to notify the E.P.A. before you put it in,ö Mr. Neltner said, referring to the
Environmental Protection Agency. ôBut if you put it into food and can document
it as recognized as safe by someone expert, you donÆt have to tell the F.D.A.ö

MMMMM----- Recipe via Meal-Master (tm) v8.06

      Title: Drip Beef
 Categories: Beef, Sandwiches, Herbs, Breads
      Yield: 11 servings

      4 lb Chuck roast
           Salt & black pepper
      2 tb Butter
      2 tb Oil
      2 c  Beef broth
      2 tb Minced fresh rosemary
     14 oz Jar pepperoncini
     10    (to 12) buttered, toasted
           - deli rolls
      2 lg Yellow onions; sliced,
           - sautéed
           +=IN=+
      1 tb Butter until light golden
           - brown

  Season the chuck roast with salt and pepper. Melt the
  butter and oil in a heavy pot over high heat. Sear both
  sides of the chuck roast until very browned, about 5
  minutes in all.

  Pour in the beef broth and 1 cup water. Add the rosemary,
  then pour in the pepperoncini with their juice. Now cover
  the pot and simmer for 4 to 5 hours, or until the meat is
  tender and falling apart.

  Remove the roast from the pot. Using 2 forks, shred the
  meat completely. Then return the meat to the cooking
  liquid. Keep warm.

  To serve, slice wedges out of the top of the deli rolls.
  Heap a generous portion of meat on the roll, then spoon
  some of the cooking liquid over the meat. Top with a few
  peppers from the pot and plenty of caramelized onions. Top
  the sandwiches with the wedges of roll and serve to a
  roomful of ravenous guests.

  Makes 10 to 12 servings
