Ärende: bit of a pity 696
=========================
Hi Michael,

RH> Marketplace is trying to get us to buy more salmon and for the not
so RH> aware consumers, this sounds like a great idea.

ML> I am a bit leery of all this genetic modification (and don't
ML> actually see how it works) but would taste the stuff. What if
ML> the eel genes added more than the fast growth, such as eely
ML> flavor or long skinny body type?

I know, makes you think twice if you see any fish on a menu now. Have to
ask some serious questions of the waiter/tress and/or got to the kitchen
and ask the chef.

ML> Those of us that are
RH> aware of what goes on to make the "super fish" most likely won't buy
RH> it since we don't buy farm raised seafood to begin with.

ML> Pity - farmed seafood seemed to show much promise at first,
 ML> especially to alleviate the worldwide shortage of protein;
ML> of course, now it's gone the way of all profitable flesh.

I know, I've tended to order fish fairly often over the years, even when
I was a kid (the rare times we did eat out). Now I'll be more suspicious
of it; if it doesn's say wild caught, I'll probably go with something
else. That's where, when we lived in Swansboro, we'd go down to where
the boats came in and sold their catch to a local market and buy our
fish there. About as fresh as you could get it and you knew it wasn't
farm raised.

RH> year ahead) but not on a regular basis. Don't know where we'll be at
RH> the time of the 40th reunion, or if it'll even be possible to go.
ML> Of my favorites, one will be there but be mobbed because
ML> he's some kind of celebrity, and the others will likely not
 ML> be caught dead there.
RH> AFAIK, nobody in our class achieved celebrity status

ML> It seems to have its pluses and minuses. Losing privacy is one
ML> of the big minuses. On the other hand, he's a millionaire now.

Probably losing privacy is the hardest part of having all of that money.
I'd most likely spend some of it but keep the bulk of it put away for
old age, grandkids education, parents needs, etc.

ML> Funny story. There was this guy Stephen Jay Gould - you've
ML> probably heard of him and may have less favorable opinions of

Only Jay Gould I know of is long gone from this earth--he was a
financier in NY City (Wall Street?) well before our time. IIRC, he was
raised in the Catskills.

ML> him than I do. Nice enough guy, music student of a friend of
ML> mine. Well known in the scientific community, enough so that
ML> every biology student in the world probably knew his name at
ML> least. But his book jackets didn't have his face on them, and
ML> he at least personally had his privacy intact. But he made the
ML> mistake of appearing as an expert on Ken Burns's series about
ML> baseball, of which he was a terrific fan. Anyhow, I was riding
ML> the subway late at night and saw him get recognized by a bunch
ML> of teenagers. "Aren't you Stephen Jay Gould?" And he was almost
ML> pathetically thankful for being recognized ... but his smile
ML> turned into a crestfallen look when they wanted to talk about
 ML> baseball instead of biology.

Get known for some trivial thing and it'll stick with you, no matter
what you do with the rest of your life. I understand that Shirley Temple
Black gets asked to sing "On the Good Ship, Lollypop" even now quite
often at speaking engagements.

ML> to the airport to transfer, and have had several Dr. Peppers.
RH> So, do they taste more fruity or cola-y?
ML> Fruity, but with a dark fruitiness. People liken it to prunes
ML> or dried cherries. But if you taste Coke or Pepsi with the aim
ML> of detecting fruit, you can find some citrus.
RH> Does it hold for the diet colas as well?

ML> Do you mean do diet colas have detectable citrus? - yes, they
ML> do, but only if you think long and hard about it. The taste is
ML> more noticeable when the stuff has gone flat.

I'll have to let one go flat and then try it but I can sort of figure
the taste already.

ML> Occasionally I get the yen for a grape Nehi - Crush is about the
ML> closest you can come these days, but it has a bit of that spicy
ML> weird aftertaste that I detected in Fanta a few years back.
RH> That aftertaste was another contributer toward my losing interest in
 RH> fruit flavored sodas.

ML> The only thing I can see in the ingredients that might add a
ML> strange taste is "brominated ester of wood rosin," the reason
ML> for the use of which I don't know.

Who? What? In my drink? Why?

ML> It is after all a syrup!
RH> And as such, I'm avoiding them, even my favorite, maple syrup.

ML> Tried agave? Supposed to be low glycemic though very sweet (very
ML> high in fructose, so the dissonance between the touting of it for
ML> health reasons and the demonization of various other fructose
ML> solutions puzzles me). To me it had very little flavor and made
ML> me wonder what if one added natural flavors to it, such as maple.

Steve bought a bottle of agave syrup and used it all up before I even
tried it. Guess we'll have to get some more, or, on the other hand, just
skip it and stick with the stevia.

Catch you later,
Ruth
