Ärende: flying high 705
=======================
Hi Michael,

RH> We're flying out west next week so I checked the TSA web site
RH> regarding the transport of insulin, needles for the pen and lancets.
 RH> Diabetic needles are OK

ML> In theory. So are musical instruments, knitting needles, and
ML> a lot of things that the blueshirts have had problems with.
 ML> I don't need it, and I don't need it.

We're travelling during the week, before the week end holiday rush and
then well after the holidays so there should be less hassle. If they try
to give me problems, I'll pull up their web site on my computer and say
"see, I told you this was OK". (G)

RH> TSA says ice packs that are frozen solid are fine but it they're
RH> mushy/partly frozen, they will count as liquid. I bought a couple of
RH> small ice packs that have a harder plastic shell.

ML> Actually, smaller might be more difficult if you are over a
ML> couple hours from the airport, as they may begin to thaw,
ML> despite the harder plastic shells, which you may have to
ML> remind them to shake if they claim they can't tell if there's
ML> a liquid or gel inside or not.

We're half an hour or so from the airport, both here & in LV. They will
be in plastic bags, wrapped in a towel or washcloth so there shouldn't
be any issues with melt down in travel time. If we go thru the security
soon after we get to the airport, then they should still be frozen
enough to pass.

ML> I think you would be
RH> OK, once you got used to traveling with the supplies.

ML> I'd get used to it instantaneously - it's the TSA guys I'm
ML> worried about. The turnover rate is very high and the
ML> training doesn't allow of much rote learning, so the people
ML> at the scanners will tend to exercise on the side of caution
ML> (and giving you a tough time). There are supervisors who may
ML> be somewhat better, but the turnover there is also high.

True, but you have to go on a bit of trust.

ML> Anyhow, I wouldn't get used to stabbing myself twice a day.

I stab myself once a day, prick myself twice a day. Not fun, but got to
be done. After tonight's pasta supper (veal scallopini with penne pasta,
tossed salad & mini cannoli) I tested at 137, taken about 2 1/2-3 hours
after I started eating. Tomorrow's reading should be in the upper
70s/low 80s.

ML> The guy gave up and ate a bland diet for the rest of his life.
RH> Poor guy, I've had enough bland food in my life to appreciate onions
RH> and garlic. Other herbs and spices could be used to add flavor.

ML> Oh, yes, they could, but not like the lily family. I could
ML> never figure out how anyone could get conned into joining the
ML> Hare Krishnas, because they don't eat meat, onions, or garlic.

Conned into it, they didn't know what they were committing to.

 ML> Hum. Someday I should have an excuse to go to Rochester;
ML> problem is it's both close (in air travel terms - not
ML> enough miles for the price) and inconvenient (no nonstop
ML> flights from where I hang out). Sort of like Williamsport,
ML> but I had a mission going there the last few years.
RH> But at least Rochester has an airport.

ML> Williamsport has an airport about 5 miles from town: it
ML> has one gate. They were talking about expanding it to two,
 ML> but that's on hold.

I don't remember how many Jacksonville (NC) had but we had to walk out
to the plane and, incoming, walk from the plane to the terminal. Last
time I flew out of there was the late 70s tho.

Catch you later,
Ruth
