=====================
Hi Mike,
MR> That "is" good news. When mine hit, the Dr. Said, I haven't never seen
MR> anyones pancreas shut down so fast. They thought since it was newly
RH> They think mine was a cross reaction from a relatively new medication
RH> and prednisone. I'm off both of them now; the latter was a short burst
RH> and the former had something subbed in for it.
MR> I guess why they call it Practicing medicine. I have had some
MR> experiences with meds, I wish I would never have started taking.
MR> Caused more problems than what I was taking them for.
That wasn't the first time I've had a reaction to meds. While we were in
HI, my pulminologist thought he'd try me on Singular to perk up my
breathing. Took 2 doses and thought I was coming down with the flu.
Checked the write up, sure enough, one of the major side effects was flu
like symptoms. Discontinued it and within a day was doing much better.
So much for that. Naproxin is also a "no go" for me.
RH> test done. Anyway, I was told that insulin was needed to bring things
RH> back into line and the injected was the best way to go to regulate it.
MR> I have heard that so much, people would rather take pills rather than
MR> shots, though the shots are the way to go.
I thought pills would be better but after being on the shots for 6
months now, I know I can fine tune them to my body easier than pills.
Dropped 8 units at the last doctor's visit, couldn't do that and get the
reaction as fast with pills.
RH> (and with high carb or later than usual supper meals) my morning
RH> readings have been in the normal for me range. Guess I bounce back
RH> fast.
MR> Thumbs Up!
RH> Eating right is a big factor. I was super hyper at first, now I allow
RH> myself some (dark) chocolate and a few other (well spaced, well
RH> accounted for) sweets.
MR> Most of us, like to like what we eat. I will be honest, in many cases,
MR> food for diabetics is not always that good. It can be, but some is
I'm eating "regular" food, just adapting amounts for the most part.
Biggest switch was trading out stevia for the raw sugar I put in my tea
and a veggie juice for my morning orange juice.
MR> just a replacement for normal or what we consider normal eating. I
MR> always
MR> remember one night, My Mother was in her 80's. My Father would hound
MR> her something fierce about what she should and should not eat. In all
My dad wasn't that good on watching what Mom ate at first but has gotten
better over the last few years. He's not diabetic and eats whatever he
wants but in the time my brother was shopping for them (he bought low
sugar stuff) after Irene took out the local grocery store, he ate low
sugar too and found out it was OK. Not sure what they're doing now but I
think it's more diabetic friendly.
MR> honesty she was a good diabetic eater, by nature. Once in a while she
MR> just wanted something she liked, the way she liked it. And still not
MR> anything beyond reason, like half a pie or something. Well this one
MR> night, Corn was in season and she ate 2 whole ears for supper, with
MR> Butter and wanted a 3rd. My Father had a fit and started hollering.
MR> Well my Mother, God Bless her soul, has been gone quite a while, she
MR> turned
MR> to him, she was blind, some say by the diabetes, but that is doubtful.
MR> She looked at him and said. I am 82 years old. By not eating a little
MR> something of something I really like, from time to time, how many
MR> minutes do You think I will add on to my life? I had to admit she was
Good for her! I can see her point. My mom never followed a good diabetic
diet when she was cooking (Dad and the one cleaning lady combine on
meals now.) But once you reach a certain age, you should be allowed to
have a few non diet goodies, as long as you don't make a habit of eating
them. I'll splurge on an a small piece of dark chocolate or some other
goody every once in a while.
MR> right, I learned from her, You don't have to go overboard, but a
MR> little treat of something special once in a while cannot be all that
MR> bad.
So true, and good for the morale as well.
RH> I think I do better with rice as well. We're still working on the
RH> pasta. We use whole wheat; I had a good amount on hand before the
RH> diagnosis but it is gradually being reduced.
MR> BTW, I did try that. It is not bad, it is different. I was afraid I
MR> would not like the texture, but that was not so bad either.
We've been eating whole wheat pasta for just about as long as we've been
married. To us, the texture of white pasta is not as appealing,
especially if if it's overcooked.
MR> Beef Burger with Feta and Tomato

RH> Looks good but I need to eat more carbs with it. I'm allowed 45-60 per
MR> Well, You know I stay a bit light on the carb side, but this also is
MR> not a whole meal, just part. Add a Roll, and a side salad and maybe
MR> some Fruit for added carbs.
RH> I'd have either the roll or the fruit, not both. Yoou're allowed more
RH> carbs than I am so you could have both.
MR> I am a carb wacko Ruth. I have to be. Except for certain times of the
MR> year, usually the holiday season, I am very strict on carbs. I
MR> probably eat less carbs a day, than You do at a meal. I try to stay at
MR> about 40
MR> to 60 for the day. This allows me to take much less insulin even if I
MR> have to take the shots I take about 1/3 of what I take if doing a
MR> regular diabetic diet. So for me it would have been the burger. And
OK, as long as you and your doctor are comfortable with it. But as a
general rule, men are allowed between 60 & 75 carbs per meal but women
are allowed 45-60.
MR> maybe a
MR> green salad. I have to be crazy about carbs for a few reasons, One I
MR> love carbs, not sweets or fruits, but stuff like breads, pastas and
MR> veggies, including the starchy ones. So I lay low to stay out of
MR> temptation and
MR> trouble and take much less insulin.
I eat them, but watch the amounts. The "safe" veggies are consumed in
greater quantity; we really take advantage of the good eating available
at our local farmer's market, especially in the summer.
RH> Try making your own barbeque sauce with stevia or whatever sweetener
RH> substitute you use and maybe a drop or 2 of molasses or honey. There
RH> are a lot of recipies around for it so just try various ones until you
RH> get the taste you want.
MR> One thing I miss about the Atkins craze being gone, is You could find
MR> all kinds of low carb foods right on the shelves. Not anymore. Can't
MR> afford the specialty stores online etc. So I will have to convince
MR> myself to get the nerve and try it, I am afraid I will make more
MR> horrible concoctions than good ones though ;-)
Trial and error, you may make a few bad tasting concoctions but you may
also come up with a few winners you can share with others.
MR> Have a Great Holiday Season!
MR> Merry Christmas
You also; we're visiting our older daughter and her sister came up for a
few days. We've got 5 of 6 grandkids here--with 2 toddlers, a
preschooler, a 9 year old & a teenager, things get sort of wild at
times.

Catch you later,
Ruth
