Ärende: Snow days
=================
Hi Dave,

DD> I wish we would have missed it - or it missed us. Still, it was 59øF
DD> here yesterday - and all but the big piles of snow that the plows
 DD> stacked up are gone.

RH> No more systems coming thru? I know it's supposed to chill off again
RH> here by Tuesday--into the low 50s. Today hit almost, maybe, 70.

 DD> Nothing major - a chance of rain or rain/snow mix. But, it's 36 at 5
DD> ayem headed for (depending on whose forecast you pay attention) either
 DD> 38øF/41øF/46øF and a low in the upper 20s. Got to 63øF yesterday. It's
DD> acting more like early spring should - IOW. No idea when last frost
DD> will be. But, then, I'm not on the farm any longer -- or even raising
DD> a garden other than a couple chilies in 25 litre buckets, which can be
DD> brought indoors if sub-freezing temperatures threaten. And those
DD> aren't planted yet. Just the buckets procured (from my favourite
DD> Chinese restaurant's detritus) and planting mix/gravel/etc. in place.

We may have a frost tonight, after being in the very low 70s during the
day. Weather guy said that farmers need to take precautions but also
figured a lot of crops aren't too far along yet thanks to the cold
March.

DD> Not unless they burned down the house. And that would have been
DD> temporary. I don't recall having fireworks on the 4th that year. Other
DD> years I have a clear (well, fairly clear) memory of helping my Dad set
DD> up the air-burst fireworks and the display stuff. And being allowed to
DD> touch off some of the fuses. But, nothing for that year.

RH> Other years you've probably been much hotter than you really wanted to
 RH> be, I suspect.

DD> Oh, yeah. I always tell people I can always put on more clothes. But,
DD> there's a limit to what the law allows one to do without - especially
 DD> outside.

Yep! (G)

DD> Farmers did not do well that year either. The corn really suffered.
 DD> Wheat did OK, IIRC

RH> Before my time so I can't corroborate.

DD> I was there and I can attest to the decent wheat crop. My grandfather
DD> had also planted rye and oats as part of the enhanced crop rotation he
DD> was assessing. IIRC the small grains took up a lot of the slack from
DD> the weak corn yields. Soybeans - I dunno. I didn't hear anyone crying
DD> about their bean crop. But, in those days soy was not the HUGE thing
 DD> it has become.

RH> Now soybeans are as big, if not bigger, cash crop than grains. Some
RH> folks like to eat them too. (G)

DD> Uuuuuhhhhh, don't look now but soybeans are a grain also. And, yes,

Soybeans are a legume in my book.

DD> they do make a reasonably decent sauce from fermented soybeans. Also
DD> tofu (which I don't eat except as an ingredient is Oriental dishes)
DD> and edamame (I think). Most of my soybean consumption comes from
DD> eating animals which were fattened up on soy products. And the
DD> occasional Jack-In-The-Box hamburger which used to use soya grit as a
DD> stretcher for the real beef. To the point where the unadorned "meat"
DD> patty put me in mind of school cafeteria burgers.

I've done them as "baked" beans (in a crock pot) and gotten rave reviews
(and an empty crock pot). We've also used them for soy "milk". Tofu is
good pressed, then floured and fried in a bit of oil as an alternative
to meat. Yes, we eat quite a few soybeans, in various forms.

Catch you later,
Ruth
