-> Zayre's??? We had one of those. Also a Goldblatt's, a Woolco (the Woolworth

-> the way of Montgomery-Ward and Howard Johnson's restaurants had K-Mart not
-> bought them - lock, stock and Kenmore branding.

MR> Boy You brought back a lot more memories. I had forgot about Zayres and
MR> Montgomery-Ward. Always remember the sandwich counter at woolworths
 MR> too.

When I was a lad our main commercial street had an S. S. Kresge on the corner
and then a small fabric store and Woolworth's. A couple blocks down the street
was W. T. Grant. Both Kresge and Woolworth had snack/lunch counters. As did
nearly every corner drugstore - of which the downtown area had on on every
corner except around the courthouse square (really). All locally owned and
operated. Now we have CVS and Walgreen's retail stores with a pharmacy
department tucked in the back springing up like dandelions on a spring day. My
pharmacy, I am proud to say, is in a small town a few miles from my house - is
family owned/operated and has recently installed a real soda fountain and snack
bar.

MR> BTW, Were You ears burning Sat? I thought of You again the Saturday.
MR> There was a special on Spicy foods on Travel Channel. I will always
MR> look at You as the GodFather of Peppers. They were in Chicago and were
MR> really going to town about something called a Ghost Pepper!? The one
MR> restaurantuer was talking about how hot those peppers were, and that it
MR> only took a couple of drops to heat up a gallon of product. They spent
MR> about 15 minutes talking about this monster thing and how hot it was.
MR> So I obviously thought of you, though I know You like your heat in
MR> moderation, Compared to what I can handle you are a flaming sword
MR> eater. ;) Clearly a pepper they were claiming was about 400 times
MR> hotter than a jalepeno is way to hot for me.

I own some bhut jolokia (ghost pepper) pods. So far I have dried them in my
dehydrator and given the seeds to a guy who wants to try growing them. I have
even tangled with them in a bowl of chilli - once only. The chilli parlor I
used to eat lunch at had a really good bowl of red - and the hot was not so hot
that a chile-wuss could not handle it. Just a mildly spicy notification at the
back of the throat that you were eating chilli. Then the owner sold up, took
his "soup witch" and re-opened a landmark saloon. A bunch of us went there one
day for lunch and to try out the grub. I ordered a cup of chilli - hot.
Thinking, it's gonna be the same stuff that she made at the other place.
WRONG!!! The heat was from bhut jolokia chilies - I think a lot of them.
Friends and neighbours, let me tell you, that's the ONLY time I have ever put
catsup in a bowl of chilli. Ever. YOWIE!!!!

Otherwise the food was good, all Nancy's soups are really killer good, and the
straight chilli just like from the Chilli Bowl. So, if I want a bit more heat a
bit of Cholula, or Frank's or Crystal, or ??? does the job. No more ghost
peppers for me unless I am the one administering them. 'Tis said that the
Indian military/police uses the ghost pepper in weapons. I can well believe it.
