=====================
Hi Nancy,

 RH> I meant 11 o'clock, 6 o'clock, 1 o'clock as for the position of the
 RH> dial indicator.

 NB> I understood that. :)

Sorry, too much writing where points have to be clarified. (G)

RH> that there are no gradations. I think my mom's "new" (now over 30
RH> years old) stove is labeled low, medium low, medium, etc so it probably

NB> To be a little more exact, my pushbuttons are labled HI, 2, 3, LO,
NB> WM... The electric stove I learned on (pretty sure that it moved with

My mom's stove had those push buttons too.

NB> least from PA to NY so it was at least 40 years old when my parents
NB> moved down to Lydia's) had the dials, but I think that they might not
NB> have been gradated either.... there were, however more options than my
 NB> pushbutton has.

NB> it takes low to NB>> keep things simmering. I tend to use 3 for most
NB> things... it may NB>> take a little longer to come to a boil, but
 NB> eventually it gets there.

RH> That can get a bit boggling--do I want this part of the coil on or
 RH> not?

NB> Just to confuse things more, I think at least one of the smaller
NB> burners has the inner/outer reversed... (G) Actually, one gets used

But can you imagine a group like ours coming in and wanting to cook on
the stove? I can just visualise the discussions as to what the various
settings are, actually and perceived.

NB> pretty quickly... And, as I said, I tend to use 3 for most things, and
NB> LO is the second most used one. :)

I think, other than Off, my mom used HI and Lo all the time. I can't
remember her telling me to turn something to 2, 3 or WM. This stove was
in the house when she had a stove top coffee pot; many of those were
melted as she wouldn't always verify she had the right coil turned on.
Eventually one of her sisters gave her an electric perkolator.

RH> And sometimes the pieces you think might be worth something are
RH> nothing but junk and the ones you may write off are the high value

NB> That's where the research comes in... if one really gets serious about
NB> selling/disposing of the stuff... As long as one is just letting it
 NB> sit, it doesn't much matter... (G)

That your retirement nest egg? (G)

NB> RH>> appliance, gadget, stirring & cutting impliments, etc, etc, etc.

RH> So what are your favorite gadgets and small appliances?

NB> Lately...? It's probably the microwave... I keep finding new things I
NB> can cook in it... (G) Still can't live without a wooden spoon and a
NB> good paring knife, and my old aluminum/wire egg slicer (that can cube
NB> an egg, just by turning and slicing 3 ways)... And my portable
NB> Swing-A-Way can opener... I've got lots of other stuff, but that's
 NB> what gets used.

NB> Of course, I'm in a somewhat dormant phase... ;)

You're breaking out of the fully dormant stage, just by hanging around
us.  My favorite small tool is either my chef's knife or a wooden spoon;
they both get a lot of use. Small appliance is a toss up between the
rice cooker and the Kitchen Aid Professional stand mixer--or is the
latter a large item? Definately the microwave ranks high; it gets used
several times a day for various jobs.

Catch you later,
Ruth
