 RH>> I made last night was on about a low-medium (about 8 o'clock).
RH>> My dial goes low (about 11), medium (6) and high (1)--all else
 RH>> is just guesstimation.
NB>> Well, with pushbuttons, there's no gradations on my stove. I get
 NB>> HIGH, 2, 3, LOW and WARM.

 RH> I meant 11 o'clock, 6 o'clock, 1 o'clock as for the position of the
 RH> dial indicator.

I understood that. :)

RH> But yes, having dealt with a push button stove, it is very frustrating
RH> that there are no gradations. I think my mom's "new" (now over 30
RH> years old) stove is labeled low, medium low, medium, etc so it probably
RH> can't really be set for in between the indicators either.

To be a little more exact, my pushbuttons are labled HI, 2, 3, LO, WM...
The electric stove I learned on (pretty sure that it moved with us at
least from PA to NY so it was at least 40 years old when my parents
moved down to Lydia's) had the dials, but I think that they might not
have been gradated either.... there were, however more options than my
pushbutton has.

NB>> High is both outer and inner coils on high, 2 is the outer coil
NB>> on high, 3 is both coils on medium, Low is the outercoil on medium,
NB>> warm is both coils on low. The last is fine for slow long cooking,
NB>> once the whole pot has come up to temp, sometimes it takes low to
NB>> keep things simmering. I tend to use 3 for most things... it may
NB>> take a little longer to come to a boil, but eventually it gets there.

RH> That can get a bit boggling--do I want this part of the coil on or
 RH> not?

Just to confuse things more, I think at least one of the smaller burners
has the inner/outer reversed... (G) Actually, one gets used to it
pretty quickly... And, as I said, I tend to use 3 for most things, and
LO is the second most used one. :)

RH>> You might have an antique worth thousands or you might have junque
 RH>> worth nothing. (G)
 NB>> 'Zactly. :)

RH> And sometimes the pieces you think might be worth something are
RH> nothing but junk and the ones you may write off are the high value
 RH> items.

That's where the research comes in... if one really gets serious about
selling/disposing of the stuff... As long as one is just letting it
sit, it doesn't much matter... (G)

RH>> This is the Cooking Echo after all. We all have our favorite
RH>> appliance, gadget, stirring & cutting impliments, etc, etc, etc.
 NB>> Indeed... after all... ;)

RH> So what are your favorite gadgets and small appliances?

Lately...? It's probably the microwave... I keep finding new things I
can cook in it... (G) Still can't live without a wooden spoon and a
good paring knife, and my old aluminum/wire egg slicer (that can cube an
egg, just by turning and slicing 3 ways)... And my portable Swing-A-Way
can opener... I've got lots of other stuff, but that's what gets used.

Of course, I'm in a somewhat dormant phase... ;)
