==============================
Hi Michael,

RH> If you think you're warm, you probably feel warm. If you think you're
RH> cold, you'll start shivering. It's all in how the mind perceives the
RH> temperature vs what it actually is.

ML> Pretty much. This year I've perceived discomfort from cold
ML> at 65F and under different conditions not at -20F. There
ML> were other factors, of course, amount of clothing (I had
ML> one more layer at -20, but otherwise identical), satiety,
ML> humidity, wind, and so on, but still, that old state of mind
ML> is pretty important - I expected worse at -20 and felt like
ML> I should feel nice and toasty at 65, both expectations unmet.

Sometimes the amount of clothes doesn't make much of a difference. Other
times, the layering does help. I've grabbed an extra pair of socks or a
shirt underneath a sweater to add that extra bit of warmth.

ML> that a pound of lean beef will warm me up pretty fast,
ML> perhaps almost as fast as a pound of fatty stuff. From
ML> what people say, protein is a faster warmer-upper than
ML> fat, but I don't actually think that's true either.
RH> Probably not but those that say so use it as a convenient excuse to
eat a lot of meat. (G)

ML> Actually, it's considered an unpleasant side effect for most.
ML> I like eating the pound of meat better than the temperature
 ML> rise afterward.

I generally don't eat a pound of meat at a time. I've not noticed (nor
looked for) a rise in temperature after eating it either, probably
because the amounts I consume are usually not that much at a time.

(drugs)
RH> Everybody should be free of the effects while on the job or doing
RH> anything that might endanger themselves or other people. Same as any
 RH> other form of drugs.

ML> And, in fact, any form of anything. One shouldn't endanger
ML> others; what one does with oneself, that's outside the purview
ML> of this conference, but suffice it to say that being nice to
ML> one's mind and body is better than being nasty to it.

Yes, and I agree, it's not to be a topic of discussion here.

RH> Looks better than the hospital chicken I had today. It was given a
RH> fancy name, something like Chicken Sorrentino--tasted like somebody had
RH> dumped a fair amount of liquid smoke into the pan

ML> Ah, hospital food. It serves its purposes - to prevent
ML> people from starving and also to get out them of there as
 ML> quickly as possible.

Steve had something different on his tray; it looked like some sort of
pasta like thing. The cafeteria had signs with the nutrition breakdown
of the various dishes; the spinach-bacon ravioli smelled good but was
way too high in carbs so I went with the chicken. It kept me from
starving (and having to cook a big meal when I got home) so I guess it
served its purpose. Friday I had a salad & grilled chicken breast on a
whole wheat bun at the hospital, then supported the WF fire department's
fish fry for supper.

-=> Ruth Haffly said to Janis Kracht <=-

RH> I think they have it now to accomodate the changing tastes of the
RH> younger generation. I see Texas Pete or other "hot sauces" in various
RH> fast food type places and even some sit down restaurants, more so than
RH> I used to. BTW, did you know that Texas Pete is made in Winston Salem,
RH> NC--a far piece from Texas?

ML> Texas Pete is one of the less notable usurpers of that
 ML> appellation, being a not-very-hot, not-very-tasty,
 ML> artificially thickened sauce.

It's not our sauce of choice but suffices if there's nothing else
available.

 The best non-Texas Texas
ML> thing I think is the Roadhouse, variously described as
ML> being of Indiana or Kentucky origin.

IIRC, Indianna. There was a Texas Steakhouse and Saloon here in WF (a
chain) when we first got here. They were closed (for lack of business) a
couple of years ago, much to our disappointment because we could get a
good meal there. They also had a military (active or retired) discount &
supported the Wounded Warrior Project. A Buffalo Brothers Wing House is
now in that building; we've not yet tried it.

ML> Rosemary and Lemon Pan Seared Chicken Breast
 ML> categories: poultry, main, hospital
 ML> servings: 6

And it looks pretty good. We don't have the grill seasonings but
probably have something else on hand that would work.

Catch you later,
Ruth
