We do it too, for most of the fans. The one in the sewing room I either
turn way down to low or off during the winter. Steve also reverses the
fans in the church house for the appropriate season--he's got a long
pole with a hook thing on to grab the switch & pull/push it up or down.

Sometimes just flopping fabric onto the cutting table will send pieces
flying. I've got to be careful lest I lose any of the smaller pieces.

Our heat registers (only AC was a couple of window units) were on the
floor but we burned a lot of wood, little oil. (Yes, Steve set up the
stove area as fire safe as possible, lots better than the previous
tenant.) When we burned oil, I could dry my hair by leaning over a vent
while the furnace was running.
