Things tasted chez Clean Dave:

Calvert Extra - from an estate, looks like; the label
indicates a price of somewhere under half what I'd
expect to pay for it nowadays, if I could find it.
A very smooth beverage, rather neutral in flavor
but with a hint of woodiness and a little citrus
spicy quality. I expect that over the years some of
the alcohol has evaporated, but the overpowering
aroma of old booze wasn't there.

Seagrams 7 Crown - pretty similar, a noncommittal
booze compared to its elders VO and Crown Royal. The
grain alcohol was kind of obvious in this.

Grande Absente - this is claimed to be made from one
of the classic pre-banning absinthe recipes; it's
138 proof, green, and heavily licorice scented. Typical
in most ways, except that I think it's been dethujonized,
so the embarrassing transborder incident at Frankfurt
involving me, Lilli, and a runaway luggage cart was not
repeated.

Ten Penny Ale (Olde Burnside) - this positions itself as a
superpremium brew (quite expensive in itself, and with a bottle
deposit of 1.50 brings it up to $9 for less than a six-pack
worth, one has to hold it in pretty high esteem to buy it.

Ty Ku sake-based fruit liqueur - Dave warned me that this was
nasty and tasted like cough syrup. I found it merely mediocre,
sort of vaguely citrus (lemon Pledge?)

Crayon Shinchan Snack Multi - tasted like breakfast cereal.
What's the point? The cute anime characters on the label.
Thumbs down from me, but then I don't eat breakfast cereal
even at breakfast.

Taino Spanish mortadella - greasy as heck. Dave objected to it,
but I found it not too bad. It's much more coarsely ground, like
a salame or sweet Leb, not like a mortadella at all. Some garlic
and pepper, rather nondescript flavor. I was going to fry a slice
to see what would happen, but it turns out I had better things
to do with my stomach space.

After shopping at one of his favorite markets, we just had to
stop by the truck called Antojitos Criollos that had pulled up
on the street. I poked my nose in and determined that the
frying oil smelled okay and the cook was kind of chubby
(never trust a skinny chef, isn't that the saying). so it
was antojito (snack) time.

Fried yuca paste stuffed with something like beef taco meat
was quite good, the yuca dough worked to a sort of gelatinous
bite. An enormous blob of high-calorie food (not really
appropriate as it was 90+ out) for a buck. This was premade
but on the fresh side.

The sign outside offers fried chicken with fries, so I asked
for an order without fries. The cook took his sweet time, but
what came out was a leg and thigh of the chicken that kicked
Chicago - had to have been an Oven Stuffer. It too was quite
good though done a bit longer than I prefer (still, the
tendons were barely edible). A buck and change.

Malta El Sol - this is one of those beer substitutes; it
tastes like molasses with a malty kicker. Very sweet and
rather nice if you like molasses. No bargain, it cost as
much as the chicken.
