================================
-=> Quoting Michael Loo to Glen Jamieson <=-

GJ> A lot of Western Australia is rather wild and woolly, but the bottom
GJ> left hand corner does produce some excellent wines.
ML> Decent wines, now in fashion, taking some of the limelight
ML> away from your own worthy region, which I think requires
ML> a visit during the first half of 2011.

The WA wines tend to be rather expensive, but some are very good.
Mostly from small, enthusiastic young wine makers.

GJ> who was visiting the cabin of some gentlemen was persuaded to take
GJ> some "happy pills", together with booze. Unfortunately she died,
GJ> leaving the gentlemen the problem of what to do with her naked body.
GJ> They got into quite serious trouble.
ML> Speaking of wild and woolly. There was a defect of imagination
ML> of the gentlemen, as it strikes me that a fair gamble might have
ML> involved that perfectly serviceable hiding place all around them.

In the inquest that followed, one of the men did say that that
alternative was considered, but rejected, as it was thought that two
drunken men carrying a naked female corpse through the ship from one
of the lower cabins would have attracted too much attention.

GJ> So I will not go on such a cruise. Much better to take the
GJ> Newfoundland ferry that James wrote about, and enjoy the duty free
GJ> triple rums with the locals.

ML> Duty-free is in general a bit dodgy, as it involves
ML> layers of gamesmanship, from the purveyors, who want to
ML> minimize the difference between the going (taxed) rate
ML> and what they charge while representing to the public
ML> that there is a saving to be had, and from the taxing
ML> authority, which wants to encourage consumption of some
ML> of these goods by adjusting the levies to manipulate the
ML> consumer market (and perhaps discouraging consumption of
ML> others, such as tobacco, for other reasons). Also the
ML> complex web of suppliers, with their own agendas.

I have noticed that, not only in liquor duty-free stores, but also
cameras, perfumes, etc.

ML> I will note that the duty-free in Australian airports
ML> is somewhat better in pricing terms than in the US, where
ML> it is usually child's play to beat the prices by going
ML> to the "superstores" ore even some of the larger shops.

Because in Australia duty is calculated on the alcohol content of beer
and spirits at one rate, but out of deference to the wine industry at
a lower rate for wines, the savings to be made at the airport d-f
shops is much greater on spirits, particularly cheap spirits.
Over-proof Bundaberg rum is about half retail price at the d-f.

      Title: Pineapple-Rum Mustard
 Categories: Condiments
      Yield: 1 /2 cup

      2 tb White mustard seeds
      1 tb Brown mustard seeds
1 1/2 tb Dry mustard powder
    1/4 c Fresh pineapple, finely
           Minced
      1 ts Fresh thyme leaves
      1 pn Dried Scotch Bonnet
           Chillies
      2 ts Demerara sugar
6 tb Or more dark rum
           To thickness desired
           Salt, to taste

This hot, Caribbean-inspired mustard is based on the Champagne
mustards of France. I came up with it for a show that I was doing
with Sara Moulton on the Food Network in 1999.

Grind the mustard seeds in a mortar and pestle or spice mill. Place
the ground mustard seeds in a bowl with enough water to moisten and
allow them to sit for 10 minutes. Return the soaked seeds to the
mortar or place in the bowl of a food processor with the mustard
powder, pineapple, thyme, chillies, sugar, rum, and salt to taste.
Pound or process until the desired consistency is reached. Pour off
any excess liquid, then spoon the mustard into a small jar. Cover
tightly and refrigerate. The mustard should sit for at least 2 weeks
  before use.
