On (12 Feb 11) Ruth Haffly wrote to NANCY BACKUS...

Here's the recipe for the trifle (if the format looks a bit odd, it is
because it is actually an export from Gourmet and is not formatted
entirely correct for MealMaster.)

       Title: Strawberry Trifle
      Yields: 12 servings
    Cooktime: 5 minutes
Preparation Time: 1 hour

    32    oz strawberries, washed and hulled and sliced
     1    c granulated sugar
     2    c water - divided use
 1 1/2    Tbs cornstarch
     2    Tbs lemon juice
     1    can (14-ounce) can sweetened condensed milk
     1 pk (3.5-ounce) package instant vanilla pudding mix
    16    oz Cool Whip Whipped Topping
     1 pk (15-ounce) ready-made pound cake, cubed
          Mint leaves (optional)


  Slice berries, reserving 6 for garnish if desired. Place 2 cup of the
  sliced berries in saucepan with sugar and 1/2 cup water. Bring to
  boil. Cook 3 minutes; remove from heat. Mix cornstarch and 1/4 cup
  cold water. Stir into strawberry mixture. Cook and stir until thick
  (about 2 minutes). Add lemon juice. Cool to room temperature.


  Combine sweetened condensed milk and remaining 1 1/2 cups cold water
  in a bowl. Add instant vanilla pudding mix and beat well. Chill for 5
  minutes.


  Cut pound cake into bite-size cubes.


  Meanwhile, beat cream until stiff. Fold into the pudding mixture.


  Layer pound cake, sliced strawberries, and strawberry mixture, pudding
  mixture. Repeat the layers; garnish with reserved strawberries and
  mint leaves.

When I made this, I made two changes:
Add fresh blueberries
use 1 pint whipping cream in place of the Cool Whip.

It was delicious, popular, and I will make it again. I may try making a
vanilla custard to use in place of the pudding/whipped cream mix the
next time.
