Except that the vendors at the local Farmers' Market bring their
veggies 20 km from their farms just up the road at Two Wells, while
the local chain supermarket get theirs from the huge farms on the
Atherton Tableland in Queensland, 2000 km away.  Even locally grown
chain s/market vegetables have to be delivered to the central
distribution point by the small trucks before the larger ones take
them to the retail stores.

Broccoli or cauliflower with the sap still oozing from the stem where
it was cut that morning or the previous night is far preferable to the
stuff that is starting to turn brown around the edges.

Have you, or anyone else eaten "Achacha"?  This bright orange,
plum-sized tropical fruit is of Bolivian origin, and has now been
grown in North Queensland for 10 years.  It is supposed to have a
flavour similar to lychee or custard apple.  The thick skin is easily
removed, to reveal white flesh around a single stone.  It took the
grower 6 months to get permission to export plants from Bolivia, where
it is considered a sort of "National Fruit".  Now the biggest
plantation in the world is 17,500 trees, near Townsville.  What the
owner found rather pleasing was that the trees withstood recent
floods, followed by the strong winds associated with cyclone Yasi.

It is interesting to see what food plants have succeeded in becoming a
major export income to countries where they have been introduced.
Examples are the Australia origin macadamias, grown so successfully in
USA, tomatoes in Italy and Spain and soy beans in USA.  I heard that
in one week 4.1 million tonnes of soy was exported, mostly to China.

      Title: Cauliflower Supreme
 Categories: Newsgroups, Vegetables, Sides
      Yield: 1 Servings
 
      1    Cauliflour
           Salt to taste
      2 c  Tomatoes
      2 tb Flour
      2 tb Water
      3 tb Sugar
           Cheese- grated
           ;recipe calls for cheese
           Slices
 
  Break cauliflour into fleurettes and cook with salt til tender. Drain
  well and place in greased casserole dish.  Bring tomatoes to boil in
  saucepan. Make a paste of the flour and water and add to tomatoes.
  Cook until thickened and (flour taste is gone).  Add sugar. (Adjust
  seasonings). Pour sauce over cauliflour.  Top with grated cheese.
  Bake at 375 until bubbly and browned, approx 30-35 minutes. From:
