GJ> GJ> In the Adelaide phone book there are now 8 columns of Nguyens,
GJ> GJ> compared with 24 columns of Smiths which isn't bad, considering
GJ> GJ> how long the Smiths have been living here.

GJ> Only the plain Smiths. I also left out the Nguyets, Ngyens,
GJ> Nguygens, Ngyuens, Nguygens, Nguyans and Nguons, of which there are
 GJ> quite a few.

DD> There are a number of spellings. Hollywood seems to have settled upon
DD> Nuyen for one of my favourite S.E. Asian actresses - France Nuyen
DD> (World of Susie Wong, etc.)

I thought the name of that actress was something else. She must be
rather ancient by now, as I saw that movie over 50 years ago.

DD> But, her birth name was birth name France Nguyen Van Nga - French
DD> father, Vietnamese mother. Born in Marseilles.
 DD> Nice pictures at:
 DD> http://sandhumzjael.blogspot.com/2010/06/france-nuyen.html
DD> Especially the eight and first pictures. Bv)=

I'll look that up later...

DD> I wonder if she and Luke might be shirt-tail cousins.

A great-grand-aunt perhaps?

      Title: MRS KWONG'S ROAST DINNERS
 Categories: Info, Chinese, Asia-se
      Yield: 1 servings

Standing on the back verandah of our house, my neighbour and best
childhood pal, Helen Adams, would cup her hands around her mouth and
yell across the fence: 'Mum, what are we having for dinner?'.
'Savoury sausages and mashed potato,' would come the reply. That was
it - Helen's decision to stay for another of Mrs Kwong's roast
  dinners was made!

Playing hide-and-seek all afternoon has always been a favourite
pastime for Aussie kids. But playing hide-and-seek all afternoon in
Devon Street, North Epping, with the tantalising and dizzying aromas
of my mother's roast dinner in the air, was different again. Even
better, it was a pastime exclusively and deliciously particular to
Paul and Jamie (my two brothers), Helen and myself When dinnertime
arrived, shoelace-tied grubby sneakers would be hurriedly kicked and
pulled off at the front door, followed by a race to the bathroom for
a quick face and hand wash. Funny how when you are a child,
everything turns into a race! We'd tear back to our small but
energetic kitchen, just in time to catch Mum confidently retrieving a
large, perfectly cooked chicken from the oven.

Because a guest was over for dinner, we were allowed to use the bright
orange, yellow-trimmed fabric tablecloth. Holding opposite ends,
Helen and I laid it neatly across the wooden dining table. (On
guest-free nights, we used the dark-blue vinyl tablecloth that fell
neatly over the white round kitchen table.)

Sizzling and crackling sounds dominated the kitchen buzz as Mum
excitedly scraped every last bit of crunchy potato from the baking
dish. 'These burnt bits are the best,' she'd say, as crispy
golden-brown potatoes tumbled over one end of a white oval platter.
Sweet potatoes, irregularly shaped and wickedly caramelised, sidled
up to wilted, bluey-grey-skinned roast pumpkin dripping with lavish
pools of melted butter and nutmeg, arousing an even more voracious
  appetite.

Enthralled by this delicious dinner dance, Helen and I would smile and
squeal across the kitchen at one another, excitedly squeezing each
other's fingers. Jamie would be sauteing fresh baby green beans in
olive oil, with a little crushed garlic and salt. 'Just cook them
until slightly past the crunch - no longer,' Mum would advise.

Meanwhile, I'd grab the Chinese cleaver and tackle the chicken,
carefully chopping it into manageable pieces. Mum would be calling
for Dad as she quickly stacked a few cooking utensils in the sink.

'SLAM!' would go the back door as Dad appeared in his dirty shorts,
T-shirt and gardening gloves. Less than two minutes later, Dad would
have almost guzzled down a cold beer - and effortlessly slipped into
the prevailing mood of the Kwong kids' and Helen's gastronomic gaga.

Eyes popping out of heads, tongues hanging out of our mouths and
stomachs rumbling like volcanoes, we would all survey the golden
treasures generously laid out before us - for about half a second!

Surrounded by children's fingers pulling and poking at crispy skin,
the neck and the parson's nose, poor Helen would shrink back into the
corner, amazed and overwhelmed. I'm sure she was thinking how weird
those Kwong kids were, eating all that weird stuff.

'Come on, H, dig in or else you'll miss out, sweetie!' my Dad would
say. Helen, would politely use the tongs and serving cutlery, while we
three Kwong kids just had to have everything now, our fingers a
flurry. Mum would swiftly remind us about our manners, but we'd just
giggle cheekily and say sorry, our mouths mostly full of food by this
  stage.

Mum always joined the table last, as there was always 'one more thing
to do'. Then that one last thing would appear - a white porcelain jug
of stunning gravy Mum had just whipped up from the juices in the
roasting tin. 'Just a little hoisin, plum sauce and oyster sauce is
all I put in - that's it,' she'd calmly say.

Another display of bad manners would follow as we three desperately
pawed at the jug, forgetting to offer it first to Helen, our guest.

Mum would cook Chinese food six out of seven nights a week. On the
seventh night she would announce, 'We're having Australian tonight!'
Mum's 'Australian' would be this roast dinner with hoisin, plum sauce
and all the triminings - which just goes to show that you can take
Mrs Kwong out of China, but you can't take the.......

'Why is it that your Mum's roast dinners are sooo tasty, Kylie?' my
friends would ask, scratching their heads.
