Hi Nancy,

RH> I strongly suspect price was a big factor in the decision making. How
RH> much house could they get for their money? At the time they bought it,
RH> a good bit paid off and beat trying to find another one.

NB> And since they'd not had an inkling of any problems with the roof,
NB> yet, that didn't enter into the thought process now...

Bet they think a lot more about it and rebuild the roof with a bit of a
pitch. The walls bowed out too so it will be quite a rebuild process.
Good thing the kitchen wasn't involved.

NB> NB>> Building, rebuilding... both very similar... :) I got to watch
NB> NB>> various remodeling jobs happen next door to us, and then we had
 NB> all

RH> Including a kitchen? From all the places we've lived, I could fit

NB> Including a kitchen. I even went with her for some of her shopping
NB> expeditions, like looking for the right floor tiles... :)

Must have been some fun, deciding what to use after so many years of
having one look to the kitchen. I'd not go with faddish things but quite
a few people do, then the kitchen look gets outdated quickly.

RH> Including a kitchen? From all the places we've lived, I could fit
RH> together bits and pieces of most to make a decent kitchen. Let's
RH> see--the slide outs in the pantry and the space of the Berlin kitchen,
RH> the storage of the one in AZ.....................

NB> Of course, you'd need a large enough space to begin with... and a
NB> workable configuration of that existing space as to windows, doors and
NB> walls... ;) Unless you were building new, and could design it all
NB> from the bottom up... :)

Yes, hypothetically, if we were redoing the kitchen in the house I grew
up in, we'd probably expand it into the office room (what used to be the
guest room). Money not being a factor, we'd make an addition off the
back to accomodate a large sewing room and office/library with an
outside entrance that had no steps. Right now, the back entrance has 3
steps to the porch level, then another, higher one to get into the
house. The front entrance is like that as well and seeing my parents,
especially my mom struggle with them, makes me think that we would go
with a ground level entrance. It might, on the inside, gradually slope
up to the rest of the house. But anyway, I'd put in a built in
dishwasher, a proper pantry and lots more efficient storage space. It's
a moot point since we're not getting the house but fun to daydream
about.

NB> NB>> the fun of having a part of our attic rebuilt after the attic
NB> NB>> fire... ;) Along with all the remodeling necessary to repair
NB> NB>> the water damage below the attic...

RH> That was probably not a job you would want to repeat.

NB> No, once was certainly enough. :) But the house is in better shape
NB> now than when we bought it... [g]

That's always a plus.

NB> :) I NB>> have some leftover chicken and rice in the fridge that
NB> will be turned NB>> into congee either today or tomorrow... :)

RH> We ended up going out for supper tonight. Had to run over to Harris
RH> Italian place that was pretty good--worth a trip back. The chicken was
RH> cooked but will be eaten next week.

NB> And did you make the chicken long rice, or something more basic? ;)
NB> My congee was made and eaten... yum, yum and gone! ;)

We had the long rice with cole slaw last night. It was good; I just
cooked the bean thread noodles in the chicken brothe, then added some of
the chicken. At the table, a bit of soy sauce, salt & pepper were added.
Just a bit left over that I'll have for supper tonight while Steve is in
school. The cole slaw was to use up a half head of cabbage that needed
using; there's a bit left that will go good with something else.

Catch you later,
Ruth
