Well, sorta fish. And most of those places offer the fishy fare as 
regular menu items during the year - they are just featuring it more 
during Lent as the bean counters who worship money sniff a potential 
profit from those who worship other gods.

McDonald's has the best (IMO) fish sarnie on the burger-snatcher 
bidness. The palm used to go to the BK Whaler - back in the 1970s. But, 
ever searching for more $$$ on the bottom line BK cheapened the product. 
In all meanings of that word. These days it might as well be breaded and 
deep-fried cardboard for all the flavour and/or texture available.

McD's, BTW, uses over a million pounds of Hoki a year for its Filet-O-
Fish offerings. It's an ugly fish. But, a great sammich.

The blue grenadier, hoki, blue hake, New Zealand whiptail, whiptail or 
whiptail hake, Macruronus novaezelandiae, is a merluccid hake of the 
family Merlucciidae found around southern Australia and New Zealand at 
depths of between 10 and 1,000 m (33 and 3,300 ft). Its length is 
between 60 and 120 cm (24 and 47 in). The meat of the fish is white.

MMMMM----- Recipe via Meal-Master (tm) v8.06

      Title: McDonald's Filet-O-Fish
 Categories: Five, Sandwiches, Seafood, Sauces,Cheese
      Yield: 1 serving

      1    Van de Camps frozen breaded
           - whitefish patty *
      1 sm Regular hamburger bun
      1 tb Prepared tartar sauce
    1/2 sl Real American cheese
        ds Salt

  * use any square whitefish patty not extra crisp, like Mrs.
  Paul's, or even the store brand.

  Pre-heat your deep fryer to 375oF/190oC. After it's ready,
  cook fish 3-5 minutes until done. (do NOT thaw first.)

  Remove and add a dash of salt.

  Microwave the bun about 10 seconds, until hot and steamy.
  (Do NOT toast the bun) Add about 1 Tablespoon of prepared
  tartar sauce to crown side of the bun. Place the cooked fish
  filet on top, add 1/2 slice American cheese centered on the
  fish, and add heel of the bun. Wrap in a 12"x12" sheet of
  waxed paper and warm in oven's lowest setting for 8-10
  minutes.
