===============================
Hi Nancy,

RH> That's a plus. We were in a Super Target yesterday; they were handing
RH> out all kinds of free samples. The chocolate chip ice cream was very
RH> sample and the pasta & sauce wan't too bad for a white pasta and jarred
RH> sauce. It was probably the best of the samples.

NB> Of course, the samples are only as good as the products themselves..
NB> ;) I figure, most places, a sample will let me know that there really
NB> isn't any point in buying the product after all, and I don't have to
NB> waste my money in the meantime. ;) Once in a while, one gets to

Very true; if a product is good, then it will show, even if it is
prepared with just a toaster oven or some other basic small appliance. I
think they try to feature products that will appeal to most people, not
those of us who know and appreciate good food. They were offering sample
of a toilet bowl cleaner in Wal-Mart yesterday but I didn't take any. I
asked the demonstrator if it was scented and she said "yes" so I told
her I don't use scented products because of my asthma. She said she'd
never thought about it being an irritant. (It's a put in the bowl &
leave for however long it takes to disappear type cleaner.)

NB> taste something that is worth getting, and that's a bonus. :) I
 NB> recently had canned
NB> corn (tasted tinny still, but not as bad as some) and some sort of
NB> stuffed (with tomato sauce and sausage) pocket bread (which wasn't too
NB> bad, but didn't sit too well after) at BJ's, another place that often
NB> has samples. But I have bought a few things there because the sample
NB> turned out not to be too bad, especially if I'd already been
NB> considering it for some possible future purchase... :)

I understand Costco is really big on handing out samples, even during
the week. Most stores just do it on the week end. We sort of looked for
the chicken but it wasn't in either place the demonstrator said it would
be so we decided we didn't really want it. I could probably do a better
version for a bit more fuss but cheaper. We have stopped buying a lot
of things like that and making our own version instead.

NB> NB>> Desserts, french toast, tea, on buttered toast, on shredded

RH> Most of her desserts now are ice cream (unless they have company) or

NB> One can sprinkle cinnamon on that... ;)

Can, but she doesn't.

 RH> store bought cookies.

NB> Hmmm... Jan Hagles have cinnamon on them, and I've sometimes seen
 NB> cinnamon pizzelles...

They always get the cheap store brand sandwich cookies, as big a package
as they can. All unnatural flavors, white flour and sugar, chemical soup
of preservatives, etc.

RH> They don't do french toast very often, then it's
 RH> served with confectioner's sugar or maple syrup;

NB> One puts the cinnamon into the milk&egg mixture so it gets cooked into
 NB> the french toast.

One does if they're used to doing so but can't get them to give up the
way they've done it for so long. At least it's hard to get them to
change living such a distance from them. If we were much closer, I might
be able to get them to try it (once or twice) but then they would go
back to the way they've done it for years.

RH> tea is seldom drunk, sometimes iced in the summer but never hot.

NB> I suppose one would have to like cinnamon to add it to iced tea,
 NB> generally... ;)

Sounds logical. (G)

 RH> Cold cereals--I just can't
RH> see her putting cinnamon on them. She uses raisins instead of sugar.

NB> Raisins instead of sugar is a good compromise. (And cinnamon goes
NB> really well with raisins... [g])

She will eat the store version of Cinnamon Toast Crunch. It used to be
one of my favorite cereals until they started making it with HFCS.
That's part of my folk's problem; they are not label readers so they
don't realise all the bad for them things they are eating. Their doctor
really needs to send them to a good nutritionist who will give them a
list of what to avoid and what's OK. I think he's afraid to make too
many changes in their diet at their ages tho.

RH> Buttered toast is rare; it's usually regular bread with jelly at
RH> breakfast. I don't think the toaster oven does a very good job of
RH> making toast so it's a rarity, even more so than when I was a kid.

NB> Some jellies go well with cinnamon, too... Of course, if she doesn't
 NB> like cinnamon... ;)

She does, but in very small amounts. That's why they had a jar of it on
the shelf last year that was almost 20 years old. I got rid of it (no
smell at all) and I think they're buying smaller quantities of it now.

RH> She buys the Smucker's no sugar jellies; it's a small step towards
 RH> helping out.

NB> It's a good start. At least it does seem as though she is trying to
NB> make some changes for the better. :)

A rather half hearted attempt to change. If she were serious about
getting her blood sugar levels down, she would (and could) do a lot
more. It just seems that the token gestures are all she feels are
needed, and not give up her sweets. Sigh!
