Nancy Backus Said to Dave Drum about Re: Cars was:Tracking Sal

NB> DD> I'd not want to own one. Whilst it's not as big as a Hummer
NB> DD> (even a 3) it's still plenty overstuffed. And it does too much
NB> DD> toward taking the actual driving and decision making about
NB> DD> driving things out of the hands of the operator. If I wanted
NB> DD> something like that I'd wait for the Google auto-drive cars to
NB> DD> become common.

NB> I wouldn't want either of them either... :)

NB> DD> Of course, I'm old enough to remember the old CJ-2 Jeeps that
NB> DD> came back from WWII and Korea.

NB> True... My son bought a utilitarian Jeep, which he ended up driving
NB> more than the BMW... he scoffs at the "top-o-the-line" jeeps, says
NB> they aren't really jeeps... :)

True dat. Are you familiar with the etymology of the Jeep? It was the
vocalisation of the designation of the light (1/4 ton) truck specified
by the army to be a general purpose (GP) vehicle. From GP we got Jeep.
From Jeep we get (currently) a lot of tarted-up plushmobiles that the
original guys who envisioned the Jeep would not recognise.

NB> DD> No really "major" stuff is downtown if you don't count sh!+
NB> DD> kicker country concerts, WWE events, Monster Trucks and some
NB> DD> rock concerts at the Convention Centre.

NB> Oh, right, I forgot about the convention center and the Veterans
NB> Memorial arena... those get that sort of thing, and the circuses,
NB> and the hockey games.... right downtown... :)

Oh, right. I forgot the Shrine Circus - which used to be held at the
Illinois National Guard's main armory across the street from the State
Capitol complex. But, it had a wooden floor that doubled as a dance
floor, basketball court, etc. And the Convention Centre has concrete
floors - elephant poo is a *lot* easier to scrub from concrete than from
wood.

NB> NB>> And then we have all sorts of restaurants and clubs right
NB> NB>> downtown, as well as all around town, and in the close and not
NB> NB>> so close suburbs. Lots of ethnic restaurants of all types,
NB> NB>> from the various Asian (Chinese, Japanese, Thai, Indian,
NB> NB>> Vietmanese, etc), to Ethiopian and other African to almost
NB> NB>> anything you could think of... The major chains tend to be
NB> NB>> more in the outer suburbs... near the malls... ;)

NB> DD> I think the downtown area has one decent restaurant. A couple
NB> DD> of Italian places and a *lot* of snatch & grabbit venues. No
NB> DD> Mexican, Indian, Chinese, etc. And no Japanese now that Jimmy
NB> DD> Oh's Bento Box has shuffled off to wherever it is that defunct
NB> DD> restaurants go when they die. Oh, and a lot of saloons.

NB> Pretty much what's downtown wouldn't be classified as saloons,
NB> here... most of them are the smaller venues for musical groups of
NB> all sorts, from garage rock to jazz to chamber groups to whatever...
NB> and everything between... it's a pretty musical city, and not just
NB> classical.... ;)

NB> DD> Title: Bento Box Twinkie Sushi

NB> DD> 4 Pieces green fruit leather; in 1"-wide strips
NB> DD> 6 Twinkies; in 1" pieces
NB> DD> Assorted dried fruits; in small pieces
NB> DD> Assorted chewy fruity candies
NB> DD> 6 Pieces dried mango; cut in strips
NB> DD> One at a time, wrap the fruit-leather pieces around the
NB> DD> Twinkie pieces. Place the wrapped Twinkie pieces upright
NB> DD> on a serving tray or in a bento box.
NB> DD> Place the dried fruits and candies into the creme filling.
NB> DD> Garnish the tray with strips of dried mango to resemble
NB> DD> pickled ginger. Serve with chopsticks, if you wish.

NB> How bizarre... probably nasty, too... ;0

NB> Ah... searching for a new audience are they...? (G)

It was the one that tickled my fancy (among just a few actual recipes)
when I went looking under Bento Box.

Whilst searching under St. Steven's I came across this one - see if you
can figure out why I enjoyed it better than the first one I posted.

Sadly it's one of those rare site that does not let you cut and paste
content - so I'll have to go dig out another recipe - probably relating
to circuses or something.

MMMMM----- Recipe via Meal-Master (tm) v8.06

      Title: Circus Cookies w/Orange Icing

When completely cooled, frost with Orange Icing. Decorate
with additional cereal, whole or crushed.

TO MAKE THE ORANGE ICING: Measure confectioners sugar, the
