==================
Nancy Backus Said to Dave Drum about Re: Houses

NB> NB>> The house my parents bought here in Rochester was also a
NB> NB>> larger four square, theirs had a full attic atop the 2
NB> NB>> stories... and theirs had 4 bedrooms upstairs with 2 baths...
NB> NB>> theirs had to be built around 1900, also, but I never really
NB> NB>> researched that.. it was in better shape than the one your
NB> NB>> parents bought, too. :)

NB> DD> That attic was what I called a 1/2 story. The floor was laid
NB> DD> with rough boards and there were dormers on each of the four
NB> DD> sides. It could have been finished - and probably the ol' man
NB> DD> had thoughts in that direction. But, there was no need, really.

NB> Technically, I guess that's what the attic would have been for
NB> them... I noticed on our latest tax assessment for our house that
NB> our attic is also considered a 1/2 story... It always feels like a
NB> full story to me when one can see that if one put in a ceiling at
NB> the "normal" height one would still have quite a bit of storage
NB> space above it that could be accessed by the trapdoor that I've seen
NB> in smaller homes... ;)

In my house that I had before the fire and the move to a mobile home I
had a central air conditioner that the tax man never caught on to. In
Illinois (or at least in my corner of it) central air conditioning is an
extra bump in your real estate taxes. So, I put the compressor down in
the pit for the outside entrance to the basement (separate from the
grade-landing entrance) and hung the shell of an old window unit from a
window on the side of the house. Saved me over $100/year on my taxes.

DD> I can get Sears appliances at the local K-Mart. Kenmore (the Sears
DD> house brand) was always dead-on reliable if not all that cutting
DD> edge exciting. But, when buying durable goods like washers and
DD> dryers and ice boxes and freezers or stoves - I druther have
DD> reliable and trouble free than the latest whistles and bells that
 DD> are prone to breakage.

NB> Kenmore was always, at least in my memory, rebranded other brands...
NB> when we went looking (a couple years ago, now), Sears was also
NB> selling other brands, and whoever was making the Kenmore items then
NB> wasn't our first choice for a fridge... don't remember details now,
NB> though... We agree on the reliable and trouble-free rather than
NB> bells and whistles...

All of the Kenmore appliances I have had from Sears - from the side-by-
side refrigerator-freezer to the washer & dryer have from RCA Whirlpool
(back when that was a reliably premium brand) when they were home in
their jammies. I currently have a Whirlpool washer and a Maytag dryer.
And an Estate (by Whirlpool) icebox. None of which came from Sears. If I
replace the washer I will probably get a Speed Queen (made in (GASP)
Ripon, Wisconsin, USA)

MMMMM----- Recipe via Meal-Master (tm) v8.06

      Title: Fresh Bratwurst Wisconsin Style
Categories: Pork, Beef, Herbs, Potatoes, Dairy
      Yield: 16 Servings

1 1/2 lb Pork butt; fat trimmed,
           - and reserved
      1 lb Veal
      1 tb Salt
1 1/2 ts Coarse ground black pepper
      1 ts Sugar
      1 ts Dry (Colman's) mustard
      2 ts Mustard seed
    1/2 ts Ground nutmeg
    1/2 ts Dried sage
    1/4 c Cold milk
2 c Grated raw potatoes (opt)

Although this fresh sausage recipe is time-consuming to
make, it's the best! You can lower the fat content by adding
the optional raw potato. This method is for food processor,
but you can also use a meat grinder. You can also stuff the
  mixture into sausage casings.

Cut the pork butt, veal, and fat into 1" cubes. Spread on a
plate, and place in the freezer for 10 minutes to make it
easier to chop. Place food processor bowl and blade in the
freezer as well for the same amount of time.

Set up the food processor and add just enough meat to cover
the blade. Pulse to form chunks about 3/8" in size. Repeat
with remaining meat. Process the fat into smaller pieces,
about 1/4", and mix it with the meat.

Put the chopped meat and fat into a large bowl. Season with
salt and pepper, sugar, mustard and mustard seed, nutmeg,
and sage. Pour in cold milk, and add grated potatoes if
desired. Mix together with your hands.

Make a small patty of the sausage mixture, and fry it in a
small pan over medium heat. Taste, and adjust seasonings of
the sausage mix if necessary. Cover bowl, and refrigerate
for 8 hours to improve flavor before cooking as desired.
