NB> It's like the parking lot syndrome... park in the same lot day after
NB> day, and you end up forgetting where you actually did park today...
NB> the mind remembers the previous spot... ;0 Particularly true in
NB> hospital parking lots, where one's brain is elsewhere's pre-occupied,
NB> and one is becoming jet-lagged from too much hospital duty... and there
NB> never is a regular spot one can just grab every day... :)

Hence all the clever identifiers painted onto the garage
pillars, so you can remember, perhaps, that you're on
level green apple seven today (as opposed to red peach
three yesterday). I hear stories of people who have had
to be driven around by the security guard clicking their
clickers randomly. I guess the only reliable way would
be to write down "green apple seven" with the date and
wrap the car keys in the slip of paper.

ML> Yeah. Thing is one has to maintain at least a minimum of both,
ML> otherwise one doesn't get enough oxygen to, you know, like,
ML> the brain or something. I could almost believe cerebral hypoxia
 ML> for me.
NB> Maybe the meds need to be adjusted down...? Older bodies often need
 NB> less than younger ones...

I'm already taking children's doses in several cases.

NB> The first meaning was somewhat an explanation for why one might be
NB> given varied shifts... but not always... sometimes it apparently suited
NB> the company's purposes to just keep people moving to different
NB> shifts... I've seen it done in hospitals, to spread the workload
 NB> around...

I can see that, but if a person works an uncomfortable
shift, that person's work is likely to suffer, and the
health care as well. Which brings me to the fact that
the hazing system that until recently dominated intern
and resident training (and I understand traces remain)
killed more patients than it made good doctors.
Unconscionable.

there'd be a few that would prefer the overnight shift, some
NB> that would prefer the evening shift, but not usually quite enough to
NB> cover properly, and even those with seniority might be shifted around,
 NB> too...

I'd rather see a skeleton crew of rested people committed
to working at night than a full staff of zombies.

From what I saw at Kodak, there wasn't much of that moving
NB> people around to different shifts, you were just day, evening or night
NB> (first, second, third) and if you moved to another shift it was
NB> considered a somewhat permanent move..

Much more sensible, I think.

   Wegmans has a distinct
NB> third/overnight shift, with many of the part-time employees getting
NB> hours anywhere in the first two shifts, depending on scheduling. The

The graveyard shift in a business like that has different
skills and duties than the daytime ones.

NB> closest I've seen to "swing" in the sense I've always thought of it was
NB> when Richard was at Home Depot, where one day he might be opening the
NB> store and the next night closing it... or worse, vice versa... no set
 NB> schedule at all

I've had friends (including another retired/redundified
engineer) who have been subjected to such. It would seem
to me that opening and closing should be matched to the
particular skills of the employees, but what do I know.

Baked Pasta
cat: Singapore, Italy, side, main
servings: 6 to 8

400 g pasta
2 tomatoes, chopped
1 onion, chopped
3 cloves garlic, chopped
4 garlic sausages, sliced
1 1/2 c grated cheese
- (i used a mixture of mozzarella and parmesan)
1 Tb flour
1 c milk
2 eggs, beaten
salt and pepper to taste

1. Cook pasta according to directions on the packet.
Drain and set aside.

2. Heat up some oil in a pan and fry the onions and
garlic till fragrant and lightly brown. Add the flour.
Stir well for 30 sec and add the milk. Continue to stir
until the milk thickens and starts boiling.

3. Add 1 c of the grated cheese and salt and pepper.
Once the cheese melts, turn off the fire and stir in
the tomatoes, sausages, cooked pasta and eggs. Stir
well to combine.

4. Preheat the oven to 190C.

5. Spoon the pasta mixture into a casserole dish and
sprinkle the remaining cheese on top. Bake in the oven
30 min or until the casserole is bubbly. Serve warm.
