ML>> a month from now, I have been promised "lifetime platinum" by
ML>> the airline, which gets all those perks except no upgrades and
 ML>> normally requires a $7500 spend (I spend on average $5000). When I
 NB>> A little more workable...
ML> A bit, but I'd prefer to spend just the 5K.

Yup.

NB>> off to someone else, and, as under the terms of the original agreement,
NB>> for shorter periods of time one would get some smaller percentage of
NB>> the interest paid back, I got that smaller amount. Closed the account,
NB>> as you might have guessed... probably did a balance transfer to a
NB>> different card that was wooing me... ;) Somehow, corporate truth
 NB>> just doesn't stay true... ;(
ML> I'm wondering if a lawsuit was in order.

Dunno... I think that what they did was technically legal... if not
particularly right...

 ML> I once had a fee-free-for-life CAP card (sort of a junior
ML> Master Charge), but of course it wasn't possible to enforce that,
ML> as the entire system went under. And a life membership in the Off
ML> the Wall Cinema, which died an agonizing death after being
ML> evicted in favor of a tenant who could pay more (La Groceria,
ML> which I never patronized because of that fact, even though it
ML> was supposed to be one of the best in Boston - I waited over 30
ML> years for it to go out of business and then danced with glee).

The trouble is that it's for the life of the operation, not necessarily
the life of the patron... I don't blame you at all for your reaction to
the second situation... :)

ML> I'm currently guaranteed Star Gold for life and United Platinum
ML> for life (that being the normally 7500 a year status), but we're
ML> all aware that that is that of United, not of me.

Exactly.

ML> I do kick myself about the lifetime club memberships that I could
ML> have gotten - first the Ionosphere Club, which was once invitation
ML> only, but one could buy a lifetime pass for $300 in the '70s,
ML> then the Red Carpet Club, which offered one for $1000 in the '80s
ML> (Benita picked one up, I didn't), then the President's Club for
ML> $3600 I think in 2008 or so. All of these translated into
 ML> lifetime United Club membership.

One has to have the foresight and the dosh... and the luck of the
eventual outcomes... ;) I've invested in a couple of life memberships
in genealogy societies I expected to want to stay a member of... there
are a couple others that I kinda wish I'd had the money a number of
years ago to do the same for... So far neither of the ones I do have
have gone under, and I expect to get my money's worth... :)

ML>> But this place wasn't actually a place where World War II
ML>> sailors got in trouble. Vegas may have been well on its way to
ML>> becoming Sin City, but it wasn't and isn't somewhere that sailors
ML>> would frequent, being in the middle of the desert and all.
ML>> I said it was "the kind of place ..."
NB>> Of course... the Vegas joint just stole the atmosphere... ;) And
NB>> maybe wasn't quite as floozy or whatever as the real thing... ;) Just
NB>> gave the same sort of feeling... (G)
ML> Yep. Self-consciously divey. The problem is that it allows
ML> smoking and has no circulation (possibly intentional), and
ML> not even mentioning lungs, my clothes and hair had to be
ML> washed twice to get the atmosphere out.

Hmmm... A quick peek inside the door would indubitably be sufficient
for me, then... ;) (If that... [G])

ML>> (it's a solar watch). So I installed Free Alarm Clock, which
ML>> I recommend highly, except the sound went out on this computer.
 NB>> Sigh...
ML> That program saved my bum at least once, when I was
ML> extraordinarily tired and snoozing in an Air Canada
ML> room, and the alarm went off. I was so tired I didn't
ML> hear it, but some other folks did and nudged me awake.
ML> I think that was on the way to meet up with Lilli and
ML> then fly to YZF to see Jim and family. So just a year ago.

Guess you just need to somehow get the sound fixed on the puter,
then...? :)

NB>> I've seen a number of wall clocks that are analog 24-hr... some
NB>> with the second set of numbers under the first go-round... which
NB>> would help not at all with wondering if you are am or pm
 ML> Exactly.

The rarer ones with the works actually for 24-hr might have a chance,
though... though the digital ones might be easier to read... :)
