Ärende: Books and reading [1]
====================================================================
Hi Dave,

RH> If Im reading a lot, I'll recharge the battery when it dips below
RH> about 40%, otherwise it goes weeks on a charge. It does connect to
RH> the internet to download books but we've not done too much of
RH> that--need to get more--so I can't tell you how that affects battery
RH> life. OTOH, the tablet stays plugged in when not using it.

DD> I usually keep mine in the car and read at restaurants whilst dining
DD> alone. Or when waiting for appointments to be called, etc. When the

I usually don't dine alone. For appointments I'll either bring my book,
a crossword puzzle book or read the magazines in the waiting room.

DD> little requester pops up and says "Time To Re-Charge" I bring it in
DD> and hook it to the USB until the light goes green (showing full
 DD> charge).

I'll keep half an eye on it, just to ensure it doesn't go out at the
wrong time.

DD> I am currently finishing up a hard-cover real book. Then I'll be back
DD> to working my way through the John D. MacDonald "Travis McGee" series
 DD> on
DD> the Kindle. Then on to the four or so freebies I got via Book Bub.

I'm working more on other things than books now. Doing some cross
stitching on a quilt, keyboard work, etc. Pick up/put down book is a
quilting encyclopedia.

 DD> SNIP

DD> Our first glass teat was a "projection" set. It had a 3" very bright
DD> picture tube that projected images onto a mirror which reflected them
DD> onto the "screen". It got three channels (This was 1950) - none of
DD> them 24 hour broadcasters. I know my dad bought it second hand from
 DD> someone
DD> who got a "direct-view" TV that didn't have to be watched in a
DD> darkened room. I remember, fondly, Captain Video, Sealtest Circus,
 DD> even (later)
DD> Captain Kangaroo and Kukla, Fran and Ollie.

And cornier/cheesier ads than we have now? Or were they more serious?

RH> RH> DD> Books are better than either movies or the glass teat - a
RH> RH> DD> well written book lets me imagine the entire scenario in my
RH> RH> DD> mine and build my own "castles in the air". Even a most
RH> RH> DD> excellent movie is merely a

RH> RH> And scientififcally proven, as per an article in the paper a few
RH> RH> weeks ago.

RH> DD> Got a link? I think I am interested in reading that article.

RH> Sorry, it was in the "News and Observer", nando.com, (Raleigh paper)
RH> I but don't recall the date. Late-ish January or early February is
RH> I the best can tell you.

DD> Ah well, 'twould have been nice.

Had I known you would be interested, even a few weeks later, I would
have saved it. That's the breaks.

RH> compete with one who does it for a living.

DD> Few of us can. I used to be a line cook and run a restaurant kitchen.
DD> Still, I'd need to re-hone those knife skills, skillet handling, etc.
DD> But, that's another of those things I'm not going to spend one of my
DD> jealously hoarded Round Tuits on.

I never was a serious cook for anyone other than family, for the most
part. They had to take the food as it came, even if it didn't always
look pretty.

RH> RH> I do like having back story sometimes, other times I think
RH> RH> authors get into it a bit much. Michener doesn't use it too
RH> RH> often but I noticed in his later books he tied characters from
RH> RH> one into another, tho in very minor parts.

RH> DD> The kind of "back story" to which I was referring is the author
RH> DD> describing the protagonist's thought processes - which is very
RH> DD> difficult for a director to do without putting his audience
RH> DD> into snooze mode. And which takes a most excellent actor to put
RH> DD> across without verbalising that thought process.

RH> OK, I was going for back story as in filling in bits of information
RH> from previous books in a series, showing how the character has
RH> gotten to the current point.

DD> A properly written book, even as part of a series, should stand well
DD> on its own dust jacket. Nothing against referencing prequels in the
 DD> story.

No, because sometimes you need the prior information to know why the
character behaves why he/she does.
