Sounds like my dad except he mutes the ads. Then when the show comes
back on, he unmutes the set and sound comes roaring back. it was really
bad several years ago when Rachel, David & kids were staying there.
They'd have the kids settled down for the night, then Dad would turn on
the 11 o'clock news and...............................

Might take a look, tho I've not used the ASL in years. Every so often
it's handy, especially when trying to communicate with Steve across a
crowded, noisy room.

Label removal seems common, sometimes I've seen fake labels as well.
But, Campbell's is the most common canned soup so they very well could
be the soups used. Can't say as I've bought many of them in the last few
years, switched to more of the Amy's Organics.
