I've lived over and next door to restaurants and saloons a number of times.
But, you seem to have hit the "Big Casino" being at the mercy of the dumpster.
When I was living over and around restaurants and bars it was in the
pre-dumpster days and trash/garbage was collected every day. So, the stuff
didn't have time to ferment as often happens in a dumpster on a long pick-up
cycle. At one place the garbage truck was a regular at 6:30 in the morning. It
served for an alarm clock.

Still, while I enjoy an occasional glass of beer (I know you don't indulge) the
smell of stale beer will put me right off a place. I don't mind being downwind
from most restaurants. And a Chinese/Oriental restaurant can be quite pleasant
as an olfactory neighbour. But, I don't want to be next to a Burger King and
the smell of burnt hamburger meat from their exhaust stacks.

That's understandable. In the Great American Outback hog feeder operations tend
to spaced widely. And, while they are stinky, you nose has a chance to recover.
Worse in my estimation are poultry operations. There is/was a huge chicken
ranch north of Decatur, IL that raised both meat birds and gathered eggs. The
reek from their factory buildings and the guano pile when the wind was from a
certain quarter .....

But, the worst I ever smelled was a HUGE cattle feedlot near the aptly named
town of Hereford, TX on US 70. The wind was out of the southwest (right in our
faces) and we could begin to smell it shortly after getting off of I-27 south
of Amarillo. Even after we passed the feed lot the smell lingered almost to
Clovis, NM. But, that may have been more imagination and memory than actuality.
Fortunately it hasn't put me off of beef.

When tobacco smoke is fresh it's not too horrid. My grandfather smoked Bond
Street pipe tobacco and I always rather enjoyed the smell. But, the lingering
stink in a room or vehicle will sometimes make it smell like the bottom of an
over-used ashtray. At that point Febreeze becomes my friend. I used to be a
smoker (42 years worth) and others smoking never bothered me or triggered a
desire to re-start that filthy habit. But, that ashtray smell is quite
off-putting.

MMMMM----- Recipe via Meal-Master (tm) v8.06

      Title: Bond Street Homemade Granola
 Categories: Snacks, Grains, Nuts
      Yield: 5 cups

          Cooking Spray
     3 c  Old-fashioned oats
   1/2 c  Raw unsalted walnuts; chopped
   1/2 c  Unsalted almonds; chopped
   1/2 c  Unsalted pecans; chopped
   1/2 c  Maple syrup
   1/4 ts Salt
   1/4 ts Ground cinnamon

  Preheat the oven to 300oF/150oC. 

  I use a silpat, and then spray it with cooking spray.

  In a medium bowl combine the oats, nuts, maple syrup,
  salt, cinnamon. Spread the mixture onto the baking sheet
  and bake until golden brown, stirring occasionally, about
  30 minutes. Transfer the sheet to a cooling rack and let
  cool completely. Store in the refrigerator in an airtight
  container.
