There is, after all, the saying... Those that can, do; those that can't,
teach; those that can't teach, write the textbooks.... ;)  Like most
sayings, it isn't always accurate... :)

Degrees and training aren't always identical... and I'd put that second
example into an apprenticeship situation... more than one way to be well
trained, after all...  :)   He probably had better training than many
who have gone through the various music schools and received degrees...

I remember going through various statistics and other math-based courses
in college after making it through calculus and differential equations
(DifEQ)...  the later courses were a breeze...  ;)  Teaching it might
have required a little more attention, but I doubt much more..  ;)
