I use celery quite a bit - tarragon somewhat less. Nutmeg - unless I am making
an apple pie, hardly ever. And I have never, to my certain knowledge used
saffron - I don't stock it and probably won't mostly because of the expense.
Someone could substitute safflower or turmeric or marigold and I'd likely never
twig to the swap.

As far as I am concerned "practical jokes" are as foreign to the tree of humour
as walnuts are to an apple tree. I'm not the one who grafted "practical jokes"
(as mis-named as "military solution") to the tree of humour. And I refuse to
recognise it as belonging.

      Title: Gingerbread Apple Cobbler

      Yield: 9 servings
 
      4    Apples; peeled, cored,
           - sliced
      1 tb Lemon juice
    1/2 c  Sugar

MMMMM--------------------------TOPPING-------------------------------
      1    Egg
    1/2 c  Buttermilk
    1/4 c  Molasses
    1/4 c  Sugar
      1 c  Flour
    1/2 ts Salt
      1 ts Baking soda
    1/2 ts Baking powder
    1/2 ts Ginger
    1/2 ts Nutmeg
    1/4 ts Cinnamon
  1 1/2 tb Butter; room temp

  Preheat oven to 350oF/175oC. Grease an 8-inch square
  baking pan. Mix apples, lemon juice and sugar; place in
  pan. Bake for 20 minutes.
  
  The topping: Beat egg until foamy. Add buttermilk,
  molasses and sugar; beat well. Sift together dry
  ingredients. Add butter and dry ingredients to liquid
  ingredients; beat well. Pour over apples. Bake for 30
  minutes.
  
  Serves 9.
