Ärende: Mother's day dinner
===========================
Hi Nancy,

RH> We've owned copies for 35+ years of 2 of the books of poems my great
RH> grandfather wrote. I put my mom's copy of the 3rd book in the box I

NB> And then there are the much more essentially "one-of-a-kind" items
NB> like those... :) I have some copies of books of (adult) Sunday
 NB> School
NB> lessons that my great-grandfather wrote... there was a whole series of
NB> them, but they were a fairly limited production, I believe... not
NB> likely to be found just anywhere... :)

Probably not, and you're one that would appreciate them.

RH> brought down last month--most of them are in German, some English.

NB> Your great-grandfather's poems? or the box of books in general...?

Both. He was the first of his family born in the states, the year after
the family came over from Germany.

NB> RH>> other details, and to call back in a bit. She called back while
NB> RH>> everybody was eating so she could make the announcement to all.
NB> (G) NB>> At least she timed her calls well... :) Too bad you
NB> missed the NB>> guest pastor and the potluck... but that's the "luck
NB> of the draw" so NB>> to speak... (G)

RH> Yes, but I had to settle for hospital food instead of the good cooking
RH> of the ladies from church.

NB> Ah, but... you had a beautiful baby to compensate for it... ;)

Who turned 34 yesterday. She was beautiful, but they washed her in
phisoderm later that day and she had a whole body reaction that lasted a
month or so.

NB> NB>> BJ's is like that too, especially during lunch hours... :)

 RH> There's a coupon for a free 60 day BJ's membership in yesterday's
RH> paper but it expires in early July. We weren't too impressed with
RH> the local one anyway. Didn't get in on any food demos when we
 RH> walked thru it once.

NB> Sometimes you just have to be there at the right time. :)

Probably, week ends seem to be the most common time for food give aways.

NB> The NB>> closest to something sauced in my house growing up was the
NB> Sunday NB>> chicken... chicken pieces on a bed of rice with mushroom
NB> soup baked NB>> in the oven while we were away at church... the rice
NB> was put in dry NB>> and cooked with everything else... :)

RH> Does it work well with brown rice? I've seen recipies for similar and
RH> always wondered if brown rice would work.

NB> I don't know why not... It might need a little more water added, but,
NB> as it's cooked at a a low oven heat, the brown rice should absorb
NB> enough of the fluids by the time it was all cooked. When I cook my
NB> chicken and (brown) rice on the stove, by the time the chicken is
NB> cooked, so is the rice... and vice versa... :) The whole idea of
NB> the dish was that it
NB> would cook while one was away, and not be likely to burn to a crisp if
NB> the preaching was overly long... ;) We didn't have it every Sunday,
NB> but it was a fairly frequent dish. :)

My mom usually had a roast going, either beef in the electric fry pan or
something in the oven. Mashed potatoes and some other vegetable rounded
out the entree, followed by some sort of dessert.

RH> My mom wasn't into sauces and such like but this one chicken
RH> marinade was used quite often in the summer. I guess it was so
RH> that by grilling, the kitchen would not be heated up quite as much.

NB> I don't remember my parents ever doing anything grilled... But I can
NB> see where that would make sense... :)

RH> She'd usually do a potato salad and if in
RH> season, corn on the cob from the garden.

 NB> Tasty... :)

She couldn't go wrong with the chicken and corn. If she didn't do potato
salad (not a great one), we'd have the usual mashed potatoes, with no
gravy.

Catch you later,
Ruth
