======================
Hi Nancy,

RH> Next time we buy cashews, we'll have to get some raw ones and try
RH> making milk from them. Generally I get the roasted and salted for
 RH> munching.

 NB> Worth a try... :)

Probably do so after the end of the month since we're not planning any
more major shopping trips until after pay day.

NB> NB>> Slipping away. Inevitable, but hard to watch....

RH> Slipping away but according to Don, she remembered Steve and I visited
RH> last month. He hadn't visited in over a month due to working at Boy
RH> Scout camp and other committments but went up the other day and asked
RH> if she knew who had visited her in the time he was gone.

NB> Now that is actually a promising sign... at least that she isn't as
NB> far gone as it seemed... She actually is taking more note than is
NB> obvious, and can retain it... :)

Yet, if we walked in today and asked her if she knew us, she'd give us a
blank stare (if she were awake). We'd tell her, then as we were going
out, ask if she knew us and probably get the same non answer.

NB> NB>> family, if not exactly who... and her concept of her own "age"
NB> made it NB>> hard to conceive of the real relationship for her.

RH> Hard to figure out what her mind was doing then. Sounds like she
RH> probably thought she was of an age where she didn't have any
 RH> grandchildren.

NB> That certainly was the case... it had started many years before as she
NB> was regressing mentally age-wise... first I was the age of her son (my
NB> dad), then of her cousins, and so forth...

Makes me wonder, if they had lived longer, how my maternal grandparents
would have aged. My grandmother had a series of strokes over 7 years;
her memory was good initially but deteriorated with each stroke. My
grandfather died relatively young (in his 50s) of a cerebral hemmorage.
No chance to see how he would have aged.

NB> shape than RH>> Mom but his body is much frailer.
NB> NB>> Also very hard to watch....

RH> Yes, it is. We talked to him the other day for a bit. He'd managed to
RH> get out for a hair cut & to see Mom but it's harder for him to get up
RH> there now. Not so much physically, but mentally.

NB> Maybe if he understood that she is more there than meets the eye, it
NB> might make it easier for him... Some of her non-response might be
NB> stroke-related with the response locked inside herself, rather than
 NB> the dementia causing a true non-response...

It's more dementia, don't know for sure if she's had any strokes. Her
diabetes has been poorly controlled but not as out of control as my
brother's is/was. We see the lunch/dinner menues posted each day at the
facility but don't know which choices Mom makes. The meals are fairly
balanced, a bit heavier on carbs than I think they should be but, it's
not as bad as it could be. Don't know how those on Mom's floor decide
what they're going to eat but there's always a choice of 2 entrees. I
think it's a good guessing on the part of the food service folks.

RH> The other day I made me a BLT using my bread. Steve made 2, using the
 RH> denser bread.

NB> The denser bread probably was more filling, too... :) I think I'd
NB> be more likely to save that for other purposes than sandwich making,
NB> though... :) Like dunking in soup, or sopping up juices... ;)

Mine was filling enough for me. The home made bread is a lot more
filling than the store bought generic, even some of the name brand,
breads. Also, it doesn't take as much to fill me up as it did when I was
younger.

NB> brother will NB>> appreciate the help.... I did pass along the
 NB> requests for both
NB> NB>> brothers to my church, so there's some support there... :)

RH> Thanks. The "shoulda, coulda, wouldas" are beginning to hit Bill now,
RH> along with the reality of the situation that is, now. At least I know
RH> he's probably eating better while he's in the hospital. (G)

NB> Good chance of that... although we all know the variances in hospital
 NB> food... (G)

Very true there. But, he's probably not eating Hot Pockets, tv dinners,
etc in the hospital. (G)

Catch you later,
