====================================================================
Hi Nancy,

NB> RH>> Next time we buy cashews, we'll have to get some raw ones and
NB> try RH>> making milk from them. Generally I get the roasted and

RH> Probably do so after the end of the month since we're not planning any
RH> more major shopping trips until after pay day.

NB> I saw Steve's decision to back off on that experiment due to the
NB> urushiol issue... That does put a damper on things... ;)

As of now, dead in the water. But, better to be safe, than sorry. We
don't want any trips to the ER as a result of a cooking echo experiment.

NB> as NB>> far gone as it seemed... She actually is taking more note
NB> than is NB>> obvious, and can retain it... :)

RH> Yet, if we walked in today and asked her if she knew us, she'd give us
RH> a blank stare (if she were awake). We'd tell her, then as we were going
RH> out, ask if she knew us and probably get the same non answer.

NB> Perhaps that is the wrong question... I got so I'd ask a variant on
NB> that with my grandmother... I'd ask who she thought I was... as long
 NB> as she
NB> was still willing/able to talk, she'd have some sort of (revealing)

We'd most likely get a blank stare if we asked her who she thought we
were.

NB> answer... that was how I tracked how far back she'd travelled since
NB> the last time... In your mom's case, it might just get the answer
NB> that she does recognize you for who you are... And it may just be
 NB> that your
NB> telling her who you are sufficiently lodges there that she could bring
NB> it up for your brother later... :)

It may have just been a good day for her when my brother visited. We
probably are lodged in some recess but bringing it out is nigh on to
impossible at this stage of life.

RH> Makes me wonder, if they had lived longer, how my maternal
RH> grandparents would have aged. My grandmother had a series of strokes
RH> over 7 years; her memory was good initially but deteriorated with
RH> each stroke. My grandfather died relatively young (in his 50s) of a
RH> cerebral hemmorage. No chance to see how he would have aged.

NB> No real telling... There's so many factors, most of them
NB> health-related, in one way or another... My grandmother's body was
NB> strong enough to get her to age 97, but strokes probably precipitated
NB> the memory regression. My other grandmother gradually became frail in
NB> body, but her mind was
NB> still sharp when she passed at age 94. My paternal grandfather had a
NB> series of heart attacks (and had had lung cancer diagnosed) and died
NB> at 73, still pretty young and not all that frail. My other
 NB> grandfather
NB> ended up with prostate cancer that eventually spread, but he lived
NB> well into his 90's too. His mind was still pretty good up until the
 NB> cancer
NB> spread there, at the very end...

Sounds like you've got the genes to live into your 90s. My dad's folks
both passed away in their 60s so having my folks around into their 80s
and 90s is doing well.

NB> NB>> Maybe if he understood that she is more there than meets the
NB> eye, it NB>> might make it easier for him... Some of her
NB> non-response might be NB>> stroke-related with the response locked
NB> inside herself, rather than NB>> the dementia causing a true
 NB> non-response...

RH> It's more dementia, don't know for sure if she's had any strokes. Her
RH> diabetes has been poorly controlled but not as out of control as my
RH> brother's is/was. We see the lunch/dinner menues posted each day at
RH> the facility but don't know which choices Mom makes. The meals are
RH> fairly balanced, a bit heavier on carbs than I think they should be
RH> but, it's not as bad as it could be. Don't know how those on Mom's
RH> floor decide what they're going to eat but there's always a choice of
RH> 2 entrees. I think it's a good guessing on the part of the food
 RH> service folks.

NB> After a while, the staff probably would have some idea of what is more
NB> likely to be appreciated by the persons... And possibly have ways of
NB> interacting with them to draw out some sort of response... :) Of
NB> course, just because it gets set before them doesn't mean for sure
NB> that it would all be eaten... :)

On that floor the residents all seem to be lost in their own little
worlds. They respond at times to the care givers but usually not
coherently. A lot of them have trouble feeding themselves also so staff
does help somewhat, so the folks get some food. Oversized bibs are a big
help there.

NB> RH>> The other day I made me a BLT using my bread. Steve made 2,
NB> using the RH>> denser bread.
NB> NB>> The denser bread probably was more filling, too... :) I think

RH> Mine was filling enough for me. The home made bread is a lot more
RH> filling than the store bought generic, even some of the name brand,
RH> breads. Also, it doesn't take as much to fill me up as it did when I
 RH> was younger.

NB> You've shrunk your tummy, and haven't quite the caloric needs of
 NB> earlier times... ;)

Not nursing a baby or running after a toddler any more. (G)

NB> least I know RH>> he's probably eating better while he's in the
 NB> hospital. (G)
NB> NB>> Good chance of that... although we all know the variances in
 NB> hospital NB>> food... (G)

RH> Very true there. But, he's probably not eating Hot Pockets, tv
RH> dinners, etc in the hospital. (G)

NB> That's a pretty safe assumption... (G) Unless he has someone
NB> smuggling them in for him, and I understand from the circumstances
 NB> that that is
NB> highly unlikely... :) Besides, there's someone else preparing the
NB> food for him there, anyway... ;)

He said it's the same outfit that catered the Empire State Plaza where
he hused to work in Albany at the DMV. So, he's familiar with what they
serve--I guess he used to eat his big meal at mid day, at work, from
these folks. Don't know if it was anything worth writing home about tho.
(G)
