============================
Hi Nancy,

RH> We'd be down in Raleigh for a late morning or early afternoon doctor's
RH> appointment before hitting Whole Foods. They were just up the road
RH> (heading back toward WF) from a doctor we used to see (she's retired
RH> now). Have to go in next Wed. and I plan to hit up Jo-Ann Fabrics
RH> after the appointment. Can't spend too much time in Raleigh as we've
RH> got church in the evening.

NB> That's when one has an early early supper... we often find that if we
NB> eat a meal mid-afternoon, it will do instead of supper... then one
NB> only need the midafternoon-type snacks for the evening.. ;)

My appointment was scheduled for about 1:45 but had a call yesterday
from the office rescheduling it for 10:30. Since I need a test before
seeing the doctor, we probably won't get out before lunch time. We can
grab lunch (make it a more substantial one so can get by with an easy,
light supper), then go shopping and still be home for church.

NB> NB>> Hmmm.... that sounds more like a Sloppy Joe recipe... just
NB> missing the NB>> buns to serve it on... :) Not even any chili
NB> powder (or spice at NB>> all, for that matter) in it... ;0

RH> It might pass for Sloppy Joes but not in this house. The worst Sloppy
RH> Joes I ever made were back in AZ--I had an older chili powder jar with
RH> some dried peppers of an unknown variety in it. Without thinking it
RH> was that, I made up the meat/tomato mix, shook in some "chili powder"
RH> and thought "I'll just use up the jar, it's old anyway"--added the
RH> rest. Even Steve couldn't take the heat; that batch went down the
RH> garbage disposal and we did something else for supper.

NB> Yeah, I remember you telling about that before.. ;) It IS possible
NB> to get things too hot.. (G) Most Sloppy Joes I've been served
 NB> haven't
NB> been spiced up, just hamburger meat in tomato sauce, pretty much...
NB> only mild spicing if any... Sounds like you do yours more like a
NB> chili as a matter of course.. :)

About the only things it lacks from being like my family friendly chili
are the beans and corn. Not quite as much tomato either but lots of
peppers and onions with the spicing.

NB> NB>> doesn't even have a can or two of beans in it... that's usually
NB> how NB>> some differentiate between sloppy joes and chili... (G)

RH> Could be the family's version of chili. After all, I've seen some
RH> pretty "interesting" versions at the church's chili cook off. The one
RH> that won this year was nothing like what would pass for chili in this
 RH> echo.

NB> Could be, I suppose... Trying for a bean-less chili, and at a heat
NB> level that they can take... although one really should have at least a
NB> pinch of cbili powder in the batch to call it chili.. ;)

I don't know if this year's winner did--it was sweet, had sausage (link
type) in it and just not chili in, not only our, but some other folks,
opinions. No heat that I can recall either. I think the judges were
scared of heat. (G)

NB> NB>> Just came off jury duty... yesterday for lunch I bought a cup of
NB> chili NB>> from the little food service area outside where the
NB> Central Jury Room NB>> was... Not particularly spicy, but had a
NB> little heat to it, large NB>> chunks of ground meat and a dash of red
NB> and kidney beans in it,
NB> NB>> somewhat tomatoey sauce.. Not bad for $2.75, and was at least
NB> NB>> edible.. ;) Probably wouldn't buy it again, at least not right
NB> away, NB>> but I don't have to go back now... we finished our case...
 NB> :)

RH> Well, you got to try somebody's version, probably from a big factory,
RH> put into a #10 can and just heated. But, it was something for lunch,
RH> and you didn't have to cook or clean up. (G)

NB> I don't think it was from a big factory, or came from a can. It
NB> probably was just their version.. The chunks of hamburger meat were
NB> too large and uneven to have come from a processing plant, and tasted
 NB> too
NB> fresh.. ;) Also more meat than anything else... it was really thick
NB> with the ground meat.. :) And yes, it was something for lunch that
NB> I hadn't had to prepare and bring with me... :)

Sounds like they made a good attempt at chili then, but not quite
hitting the mark. That's a plus for a food service place, that they
weren't going with all pre done foods.

Catch you later,
Ruth
