Hi Nancy,
NB> NB>> Proximity to your church could make it a favorite for them,
NB> too... ;) NB>> Here, there are lots of places people can go... and a
NB> number of the NB>> chains clearly have full parking lots.... (G)
RH> It's near our current church building but IIRC, this was before we
RH> moved. We were meeting in North Raleigh, about 15 minutes away but
RH> this occurred during the week.
NB> 15 minutes away isn't all that far... we often go at least that, to
NB> get to places we particularly like... plus we live about 10-12 minutes
NB> away from church anyway.. :)
No, and good roads make for fast driving times. We've lived several
places where we've been about 15 minutes from the church. Other times
we've been closer, or further away. This is the first place we've been
able to walk to, a big help after Steve's stroke.
RH> Since we have lunch with our life group, I don't know where members
RH> scatter to after services. I hear some talk but don't pay that much
RH> attention--seems to be mostly quick serve (but not always fast food)
RH> places. Then too, we've got a fairly young congregation for the
RH> most part.
NB> Most of our members go home to eat... often inviting others over,
NB> especially guests.. We just made it a family custom to eat out on
NB> Sundays, to give me a break from fixing dinner, especially on Sundays
NB> that I'm taking my turn at accompaniment.. There was a time when I
NB> was playing somewhere every Sunday... so the custom got well
NB> established. ;)
Our former youth pastor said that before his mom passed away (while he
was in high school), she made him promise that his (future) wife would
not have to cook Sunday dinner. Figured, knowing he planned to go into
the ministry, she'd be busy enough on Sunday mornings without having to
worry about that. I've used the crock pot quite a bit, with easy do
sides.
NB> NB>> We generally finish by something after Noon... Sermon usually
NB> goes to NB>> quarter after or so... generally we don't figure to be
NB> anywhere to eat NB>> before one or later... :) When we meet friends
NB> from a different NB>> church for lunch, we generally aim for 1:15,
NB> and sometimes don't quite NB>> make it even then... ;) 11:00 is
NB> pretty standard starting time NB>> around here
RH> So you've got travel time built in if needs be, to meet friends. 11:00
RH> seems to be a fairly standard starting time but most of the Southern
RH> Baptist congregations w've been in start at 10:45.
NB> There's some variation between our churches, but most common is the
NB> way ours does it, with Sunday School at 9:45 and church starting at
NB> 11:00
NB> (prelude generally starts at ten of)...
That's the way it was in the church where I grew up. I never paid
attention to the time the prelude started because I was either too young
or busy with other things (choir, most generally).
RH> In Berlin, since we shared space with a German Baptist congregation,
RH> we had Sunday School start at 10:45 (in a nearby school), then worship
RH> started at noon. Definately a later mid day meal, especially when we
RH> had to use the bus to get there/back.
NB> Yup, sharing space can make for some interesting scheduling... as can
NB> alternative forms of transportation... ;)
But, we managed pretty well. Nice thing about Berlin was that we didn't
have to pay for public transportation (paid by Status of Forces
Agreement) directly. We didn't have to come up with money for the fare,
just show our ID card. Also, public transportation was very reliable, as
is usual over there.
RH> In HI we had a traditional service at 7:00, youth service and first
RH> Sunday School at 8:15. Another traditional service and second Sunday
RH> School started at 9:30, followed by a contemporary style service at
RH> 10:45. Then at noon, the Philippino congregation took over. Our church
NB> I've visited churches that have one Sunday School between their two
NB> morning services... and others that have SS during one of possibly
NB> three services... often it's more to accommodate more people than
NB> simply to
NB> have different styles of worship...
This was to accomodate the size of the congregation--the church is very
land locked. The cost of land over there makes it hard to afford the
amount of space to build a new place so we just got creative with what
was there.
RH> had Discipleship Training at 6 (think Sunday School with elective
RH> classes), followed by worship at 7. After that, a number of us whould
RH> usually head to a local fast food place for another hour or so of
RH> fellowship and food.
NB> With all that scheduled, one might as well make a day of it.. ;) Our
NB> church does a compacted schedule second Sundays, with a church dinner
NB> for food and fellowship between the regular morning service and a
NB> moved up to the afternoon (instead of the regular 6 o'clock evening)
NB> service
NB> directly afterwards... We had that today. :) Today's was just a
NB> basic pot luck, and good stuff as always for mains, salads and
NB> desserts...
Always fun just to sit down and share a meal with folks, especially ones
you don't see that often (if you've got multiple services). I made a
Moroccan chicken with couscous once for a pot luck in Savannah that one
guy really chowed down on. Another said it sounded good--until I said
"couscous".
NB> Fort Drum
RH> I don't know that much about it except it's home to the 10th Mountain
RH> Division.
NB> That's probably what it is best known for... :)
NB> NB>> reached us at some time or other... ;) We're close enough to
NB> have NB>> flyovers by the military planes out on maneuvers... :)
RH> Can't escape that around most military installations. One thing I
RH> noticed about WF was the lack of air traffic--after living on/near
RH> posts for so long, I got used to it. Now it's almost quiet--we are
RH> fairly near a busy fire station tho. (G)
NB> We live within a couple of miles of Rochester's airport, so we still
NB> have that all the time... just generally a different sort of
NB> aircraft... except for when the Blue Angels or the like come in for an
NB> airshow... :) One does get used to the noises nearby... Our apartment
NB> before we
NB> bought this house was two houses away from railroad tracks... after a
NB> few weeks, we hardly noticed the night trains coming through, except
NB> to miss them if they weren't on schedule... (G)
We hear the train whistle (most often at night when it's quiet) but are
too far from the tracks to hear the train. From my sewing room window I
can see the fire trucks if they roll our way, then turn either toward or
away from town. They go out usually several times a day.
NB> NB>> destination... ;) Or do it on your way out, if for items not
NB> for NB>> the picnic... :)
RH> We may get up there eventually, but right now (for obvious reasons)
RH> our travels are just between the Catskills and western NY.
NB> True... quite a lot happening with family... Only other place I'd
NB> expect
