====================================================================
Hi Nancy,

RH> This may wake him up to the fact he needs to pay attention to things
 RH> previously ingnored.

NB> One can but hope. :)

True, but I'm not betting the farm on it.

NB> change for NB>> the better, especially with a wake-up call of this
NB> magnitude... Given NB>> the loss of the foot, he may actually
NB> appreciate at least some parts NB>> of the support system...

RH> Obviously for things that would have to be done on his feet. He
RH> already had someone to do the yard work so that person will continue
RH> on. I think Don is going to see about a housekeeping service as well.

NB> I suspect that his total hermit days are numbered... ;)

They were from the time he went into the hospital. He's not been home
since mid July, no idea when/if he ever will be.

NB> NB>> Bill... Bill might learn to open up some, as time goes on...
NB> :) NB>> And you may find out some parts of it when you go down to
NB> visit, even NB>> if it's mostly from keeping your eyes and ears open
 NB> for clues.. ;)

RH> That last part will probably give us the most information. Also, as
RH> Don finds things out, he's letting us know but to be honest, even he
RH> hasn't been able to talk to doctors, therapists, etc. We're having a
RH> bit of a communications gap so are lacking in a lot of information.

NB> We've always found that sitting around, and "happening" to be there
NB> when the docs and therapists etc show up was useful in finding out
 NB> what was
NB> actually happening... one can ask questions in that context and
NB> probably even get some sort of real answers.. :)

That's sort of how Dad got talked into putting in a stairway lift. Steve
went with him for a physical therapy session, started talking with the
therapist about the benefits of a lift, would it be a good idea for Dad
and Mom, etc, etc. Therapist agreed, it would be good, especially for
Mom, so Dad broke down and had it put in. After it went in, he used it
from the get go as well. (G)

NB> NB>> There are veggies available in steamer bags now... he might be
NB> NB>> encouraged to try them... :) I've seen them both fresh (in
 NB> Wegmans'

RH> I tried the frozen ones when they first came out 8 years ago. We were
RH> living in guest housing in Savannah, waiting for our quarters to
RH> become available and cooking resources were limited. We were less than
RH> impressed, never bought them again after the first try but they may be
RH> just the thing for a non cook to use.

NB> They've improved since they first came out. And are definitely easy
NB> enough for a non-cook to use... One can even get microwave rice

I'll have to look for them. For all I know, Bill could have used them
already but if not, it's a good idea for a non cook to try. I don't know
how much of a rice eater he is; we've never discussed it. Any time I've
eaten out with him over the last I don't know how many years, he's gone
for french fries as his starch of choice.

NB> (brown rice and other specialty rices too, even) now... making that a
NB> quick and easy addition to a meal. :)

He might want to give it a try; I'll stick with my rice cooker. (G)

NB> handled properly. NB>> He should be able to find some reasonable
NB> subsitutes for the highly NB>> processed stuff that are about the
NB> same degree of work as what he's NB>> used to fixing... and be better
NB> for it... :) He might need some

RH> He will need a trip to the grocery store(s) with one who knows what to
RH> look for. Hopefully there's a Publix in his neighborhood; they are a
RH> better quality store, almost as good as Wegman's. But, if Food Lion is
RH> the only choice, he'll have to learn to make the best use of it.

NB> Food Lion might need even more supervisory help at first, to find the
NB> best choices of the less than wonderful... ;) I've good things
 NB> about Publix...

Have to keep him out of the frozen, pre packaged meals section in any
store. Same with canned convenience goods. As for Publix, we shopped
them a fair amount while in Savannah and really liked them. We've also
been to the one in Zephyrhills, FL a few times; they had a big lottery
winner a while ago but it wasn't anybody my in laws knew.

NB> NB>> available. I suppose you could check out the grocery stores
NB> while NB>> you're there, to see what can be obtained locally... :)

RH> We will do so but our food preferences are pretty much the polar
RH> opposite of his. We'll have to educate ourselves to his tastes and
RH> choices, then teach him how to make the best choices.

NB> You probably have enough idea of his tastes to be able to at least
NB> scope out the available stores in the area, and go from there... But

Not really; whenever we've been together in M'ville, we eat what is
cooked for everybody. Even in the times we've been there & eaten out,
it's been at my folks favorite place for schnitzel and all the plates
come with the same sides.

NB> yes, the more you know of what he IS willing to eat or even try, the
 NB> more help
NB> and encouragement you can offer that he's likely to accept, even if
NB> somewhat grudgingly to begin with... :)

I need to find out what he likes, what sort of diet they want him to
follow, what sort of cooking ability he has, if his kitchen is able to
be used for cooking and all sorts of things on that line before I can
begin to teach him how to fend well for himself.

Catch you later,
