Hi Janis,

JK> > If we decide to go with tomatoes--we know there are deer in the
JK> > neighborhood and don't want to be feeding them again. (G)

JK> I suspect our dogs frighten deer away since we haven't been bothered
JK> with them. I've read that if you put human hair clippings in a garden
JK> say in the lanes of the garden, it will discourage deer but I have
 JK> never tried that..

I've seen that about human hair too but we've not had enough to try it.
Since that year, we've not done anything with the "garden spot".
Ironically, the oregano we planted the same year has continued to grow,
and expand its footprint, without any attention from us.

JK> We had some rabbits in the area when we first moved to this house.
JK> After the first few weeks though, we found a dead rabbit (quite large,
JK> as well) ... I find it kind of insane, but I think one of our kitties
JK> got the rabbit. Since these cats were feral when we got them from the
JK> Shelter, I guess they are mighty hunters (grin).

Sounds like kitties are trying to get more protein in their doet? (G)

JK> > We can't officially do anything over at the new place until we
JK> close, > the week before Thanksgiving.

JK> Yep, understand... I guess a lot of what I typed I hoped you could
 JK> keep for reference :)

It will help, once we get established.

>> I found late season summer squash, which worked out really well. We
>> are still getting them now though normally one wouldn't if I'd gotten

JK> > Steve doesn't like the summer squashes that much so it's better for
JK> me > to buy the amounts I use. OTOH, winter squash would be a "go" in

JK> Makes sense. Summer Squash does have a tendency to proliferate (like
JK> zucchini hehe). I don't usually put that many seeds in for squash,
 JK> that way I
JK> don't get overwhelmed.. For instance I wouldn't put in a "row" of
JK> summer squash. That would take over (g)... I maybe plant two "hills"
JK> of say 4-5 seeds in each hill.. then I only keep the strongest plant
JK> in each hill that emerges.

Sounds like a good way to keep it somewhat in check but I think even
that would produce more squash than we wanted.

JK> "Controlled Squash" hehe One year I _was_ inundated with squash so I
JK> leaned quickly that more isn't always better.

No, you can get quite overrun with squash.

JK> > I had read what zone we're in, but have forgotten so I'll have to
JK> look > it up again.

JK> I usually go by the current weather since it's been so changeable it
JK> seems ... Technically we in Zone 5a.

I've talked to some of the farmers at the local market from time to time
about planting but not asked what zone we're in. When we put in the
tomatoes, I was told to hold off until mid to late April to be sure we
were frost free.

 JK> much > for planting this year. I'll keep that in mind for next year;
JK> we both > like the sugar snap peas.

JK> Sure.. I usually plant bush greenbeans because they don't need support
JK> (like a trellis), and sugar snap peas because I don't like to pod peas
 JK> as I mentioned...

IIRC, my dad planted a bush type of yellow wax beans. I don't know why
he planted those instead of green beans, but, that's what I grew up
eating (and Mom canning or freezing).

JK> In January you can plot out your garden on paper and figure out what
JK> will fit where, and what plants are good to plant near each other.
JK> Some don't like being near some types.. and some really love being
JK> near others. For instance, I always plant basil all around the
JK> tomatoes because that keeps bugs away from the tomatoes :)

I'm not sure what, if anything we'll plant the first year. Maybe our
roots; we've been wanderers for quite a while. (G)

>> <g> You stick some twigs in the dirt later for support, and let them
>> take off.

 JK> > Do nothing gardening--sounds like fun.

JK> It's just so great to see green living things spurt up through the
JK> snow after a long winter.. at least in NY (G)

We don't get that much, but we do get some snow in NC. It's usually gone
relatively fast tho.

>> > up, but this year was cool on into April.

>> Sometimes you can benefit from that coolness, planting lettuce,
>> spinach, etc. They love cool weather and start to bolt when the summer
>> heat hits.

JK> > It hits early around here but we had a cooler than normal summer
 JK> this > year.

JK> Sometimes as far as the garden goes, the weather just doesn't want to
JK> cooperate... usually those years one particular type crop will do
JK> better than others. Beets are neat that way, since they grow well in
JK> most conditions.. like you may not get beets with a late planting, but
JK> you can eat the greens like spinach, that kind of thing.

I've seen a good amount of beets this year, bought some at various times
at the market and put up a few pints of pickled beets.

>> > latter part of November--might be able to get a few decent days to
>> do > some yard work before the end of the year.

>> That will be great.. fantastic time to move in.. Christmas just around
>> the corner :)

JK> > Decorate the house with boxes!

JK> hahaha.. yes, well, ask Dale what it was like after we moved in here..
JK> I think we were able to get most of the boxes unpacked for that
JK> picnic, but there were still a number laying about IIRC (g).

We've had so many over the years..............................

>> be 'ground' up finely :) You can use wood chips (larger) as mulch.

JK> > Steve missed a chance yesterday--the town took down a tree near us.
JK> He > didn't go over to get any chips. Sigh!

JK> Hope you can find some later :)

He signed up to get deliveries from the town of WF when they're working
in our area.

>> healthy-looking pepper and tomato plants. I had about 5 earth-boxes
>> so rather than drag out the tiller, I used those for my "garden"
>> filling them with a soil/peat moss mix. Next year I will have those
>> boxes all ready for early planting, so that is something <grin>

JK> > So did you get a good yield for the freezer, etc?

JK> Peppers, yes, cucumbers, a couple of bottles of pickles and earlier,
JK> some in salad. I planted Italian green peppers and they did really
 JK> well. I didn't plant that many tomato plants, I think just 2.. You're
JK> a little limited in the number of plants you can plant in an earthbox.
JK> That was enough though for the summer and several pots of to
