ML>> I was referring to the coast, specifically Boston and
 ML>> Washington.
NB>> I'm never quite sure where you are... ;)
ML> Me neither. Every time I get up to go to the bathroom
ML> at night I have to figure out where I am and whether
ML> there's an en suite facility or not. Sometimes it takes
ML> a couple minutes before I can decide what direction to
 ML> travel.

Sounds like me and hospital ramp garages at some times... ;)

ML>> In New York I'm given to understand from
ML>> what Bourdain and others say that the cooks are Mexican
ML>> in all but the Mexican restaurants!
NB>> Maybe in the City... I have essentially no experience at all with
NB>> any NYC restaurants... When I visited my brother there, I think
NB>> we ate at home the whole time...
ML> Fiscally sensible, though one misses some pretty good
 ML> eating.

No doubt. :) Some day, maybe... ;)

ML>> I'm sure it will be a fine trip, and I will indeed say
ML>> howdy to the crew from the crew.
NB>> When IS that scheduled for...? About now...?
ML> A little less than a month. Which reminds me that I
ML> need to get a visa. Never got one before - United took
ML> care of it - but they've gotten too cheap to do so.

One more thing to take care of... Sigh...

ML>>> I have a Cessna flight booked for the end of this month, and
ML>>> it's free; unfortunately subsequently Lilli has asked me to
ML>>> join her on a ride from San Jose to Pacific Grove at the same
ML>>> time, plus I'll have to split gas. Tough decision.
NB>>> That makes yet another of those being-pulled-2-ways things for this
 NB>>> year... :)
ML>> Yes indeedy. Usually these days the choices are the
ML>> greater of two goods, for which I am lucky and thankful.
NB>> At least then, you know you'll enjoy whichever one you do pick... :)
ML> The choice was made easier by the Cessna flight being
ML> cancelled. So I'm going on another Cessna flight that
 ML> doesn't conflict (but it costs $41 + tax = $59).

That's not too bad... and should make Lilli happy that you could be with
her on her ride...

ML>> My grandfather spent an inordinate amount of time on
ML>> ships. I don't think he suffered too much, though.
NB>> I doubt it... Nowadays that's the luxury way to travel, I'm told.. ;)
ML> I'm pretty certain that my grandfather didn't go in
 ML> steerage.

I'm inclined to believe that... :) Diplomats get better quarters... :)

ML>> In any case, absent a chance to go there again (tip:
ML>> don't fly direct to the UK, there's a huge tax that
ML>> you can mostly avoid by flying into Ireland, even
ML>> northern Ireland, which levies according to a smaller
ML>> schedule. I fixed this by flying into either Dublin
ML>> or Brussels and connecting to Heathrow.)
NB>> I'll keep that in mind, or at least try to... ;)
ML> The rules are changing again. The top tier taxes are
ML> being cut by an arbitrary amount; apparently people were
ML> avoiding Britain, especially Heathrow and Gatwick, in
ML> droves, preferring entering via Dublin or the Continent
ML> or even Belfast, which, though part of Great Britain,
ML> caved when Continental threatened to pull out of the
ML> airport altogether if the tax weren't halved.

My last couple of flights there were directly into the Birmingham
airport, IIRC... I know that at least the last one was... But those
were all years ago anyway... If I were to go again, that might be the
case again (since it's the closest international one to where my sister
lives). But flying into Belfast or Dublin could be fun, too... :)

ML> I'm still avoiding flying directly into the UK, as the
ML> tax is still going to be L67, and if I get upgraded,
 ML> double.

That's not so nice... How likely is it, do you think, that they'll back
down entirely...?

 ML> Chocolate Whisky Gateau
 ML> cat: Scots, sweet
 ML> yield: 1 8 in round
 ML> 12 oz plain chocolate
 ML> 6 oz butter
 ML> 6 oz sugar
 ML> 3 eggs - separated
 ML> 2 dr Angostura bitters
ML> 2 Tb Scotch whisky or to taste
ML> sponge fingers to line 8" cake tin (12 to 16)
 ML> 1 Tb water
ML> 1/2 pt heavy cream - stiffly beaten
ML> Line the sides of an 8" round loose-bottomed cake tin with sponge
ML> fingers. Melt chocolate, add water. Beat butter and sugar together
ML> until creamy. Beat in egg yolks, bitters, and whisky. Add chocolate.
ML> Beat egg white stiffly and fold into mixture. Pour into lined tin.
ML> Chill overnight. Remove from tin, fill up centre with cream, cover
ML> with a layer of grated chocolate. Serve in wedges.

Now that holds some promise.... ;) Could be interesting... :)
I had an interesting concoction tonight... my son made up another mixed
drink from some different stuff he had on hand... tasted vaguely like
double chocolate cake... he told me what was in it, but I've forgotten
already... three different liquors, seemed almost harmless, but had the
potential to pack a punch if one didn't sip it carefully... ;)
