Like us, most years we've not been home for holidays, especially after
Steve joined the Army. Until we moved to GA, we probably were home for
less than 10, total in 30+ years.

So you got to know family then. Even tho our girls were raised with
limited contact with cousins, anunts, uncles and grandparents, they now
have a close relationship with just about all of them.

One year we had ribbon candy; I must have been somewhere between 6 and 8
years old then. I remember having it but there was nothing to tie it to
a specific year. Mom made the fruitcake up until, IIRC, either the first
year we were in HI or some time while we were in AZ. After us kids left
home, she made smaller loaves to send to those of us who wouldn't be
home for Christmas. Steve's mom made more of a fruit and nut, with very
little cake, fruitcake; my mom's was more cake than fruit and nuts.

She was familiar with pizzelles from my having married into Steve's
family. His mom brought an assortment of cookies, including them, for
our wedding reception and my mom had them other times as well. Dad
does't like mincemeat so she rarely had a mincemeat pie (only a couple
of times to my memory). The mincemeat in the cookies was a rare treat.
The molasses cookies were small, thin & crisp cut outs, not her usual
thicker chewier cut outs.

We're trying to figure out if we can hang the pot rack or not too. I may
end up hanging my pots on the wall, just to free up cabinet space.
