==================
Hi Nancy,

RH> And figure out who's related to who, and how they're related. These
RH> cousins removed and all that can get confusing, just as easy to say
 RH> 2nd or 3rd or whatever cousin.

NB> When I was starting out, it was kinda fun to try to keep track of the
NB> 2nd, 3rd, 4th and all the removes... Now it's just easier to say
NB> "cousin", unless there's some reason to do the figurings... :)
NB> Removes are actually pretty easy... that's how many generations one is
NB> away from the actual straight relationship... it only gets weird
 NB> really when the
NB> generations are too far off from one family to another.. but that's
NB> also when the removes can be more useful.. especially when explaining
 NB> to
NB> another genealogist in the family why some supposedly common ancester
NB> isn't, and one has to go back x more generations... ;)

Figure out who married the "foreigner" who brings in new customs and
tastes to the well established family traditions? When I married Steve,
I learned how to do proper Italian food and introduced my German
heritage family cooking (sauerbraten, etc) to him. I also introduced him
to lox & bagels, a taste I acquired from the summer I worked at a Jewish
camp.

NB> NB>> Maryville... I know that when they got married he had his PhD
NB> and had NB>> put in his 2 years of service in the Navy.

RH> So he was ready to settle down and begin applying his classroom work
RH> to real life work experience.

NB> Yup. He also had his first job lined up, as an instructor in physics
NB> at University of Pennsylvania... which is why, 18 months later, I was
NB> born at the UofP Hospital... ;)

My older brother was born in buffalo; my parents were living outside the
city in Lancaster for a bit over a year after they got married. Dad was
working for the newspaper there until there was an opening at the one in
Margaretville. He moved right after my brother was born, my mom &
brother followed about a month later (spent most of the time at her
parent's home in NJ). The rest of us were all born in M'ville.

RH> Older brothers can be a pain, and when they try to show off what
RH> they've learned in college (not textbook learning), they're even more
 RH> of a pain.

NB> Younger brothers, especially when he's the oldest boy of the family
NB> can be a pain, too... at least until they grow out of it. The older
 NB> of my
NB> two brothers, 10 years younger than I, and I finally get along pretty
NB> well now, but that wasn't always the case. :) The younger of them
NB> was not really ever a problem, but then I did help raise him, not only
NB> before I went off to college, but also later, after I was already
NB> married, and he became a teenager.. ;)

I got along better with my younger brother than my older one. Younger
brother "spied" on Steve & me when Steve came down to meet my family.
We'd gone out for a walk & brother decided to take a bike ride in the
same direction a bit later--but his bike had no seat so it hadn't been
ridden in the previous months.

RH> In high school my brother was a big fish in a little pond,
RH> in college he was a very little fish in a huge pond. He didn't graduate
RH> but (eventually) wound up working for NY State DMV in Albany. I think
RH> he ate his big meal of the day at the office cafeteria and a tv dinner
RH> type meal for supper; he's not a cook.

NB> So does he have someone else to cook for him now...? :)

No, he retired to Florida 7 years ago, bought a 4 bedroom house and
spends most of his time surfing the internet or cataloging his music,
book and stamp collections. He's trying to get his music cataloged by
artist, song, record label, etc (busy work, IMO). I suspect the
microwave does most of his cooking.

Catch you later,
Ruth
