ML> always taught that in all such professions hair should
ML> be put up for hygienic reasons. Maybe not so much any
ML> more - either people wash their hair more frequently
ML> or the amount of bug transmission is minimal.
NB> Or some precautions just aren't being pushed as much. I could see
NB> having long hair tied back out of the way just to keep it out of the
NB> way... out of the soup, out of the patient's face, not in the way
NB> while one is trying to do a blood draw... and so forth...

Of course, I never saw that big of a deal in finding hair
in my food - though it's not my favorite thing to find, the
chance of catching something from it is slim to none; it's
just a grossout factor. Still, wild-haired valley-speaking
medical personnel are not what I want to encounter.

NB> Delayed reaction, perhaps...? The body telling you it still needs
NB> downtime to finish healing, maybe, as well...? Healing takes a LOT
 NB> of energy...

Suppose. Today I had to go take the bus half an hour up
to the courthouse to do some stuff, then half an hour
back (waiting at the bus stop 10-15 each way), and I
was totally wiped.

NB> Ah. They weren't talking about that, unless that is now called an
NB> implanted defibrillator... Richard wasn't wanting anything implanted,
NB> either... but they were talking possibilities (from their point of
 NB> view)... :)

They proposed an implantable cardioverter for me, which
is a fancied-up defibrillator that does more things
(which means that it's likely to go off more often,
something I don't really want - again, it seems like
micromanaging my body).

DD> A resident told me that the current theory is that pain has much to
DD> do with blood sugar levels. When I pressed him further he admitted
DD> that he hadn't done more than hear the factoid. So, I dunno.
NB> That's an interesting factoid, though. I'd not heard that before,

Don't say factoid! It means something that is presented
as a fact but is false, in the same way that humanoids
and androids are not humans. When I started on this echo
20 years and more ago, when we used the term, we used it
mostly correctly, maybe with a jocular edge (which might
have been a mistake, in retrospect, as it was part of
this not-caring mindset that is taking over everywhere).

NB> though I have heard that stress can affect the blood sugar levels.
NB> curious to find out where that came from... I know that pain can put
NB> up my blood Pressure levels, so maybe there's a pain/stress
NB> relationship that would account for both...?

No doubt - the systems are all related and interreact,
something that I discovered that the idiot resident docs
hadn't read in their books and hadn't yet figured out
on their own.

Leeks With Ginger and Shrimp
categories: shellfish, main, not my favorite
Yield: 4 servings

1/4 c peanut or olive oil
4 lg leeks, about 3 lb, chopped
1 1/2 to 2 lb peeled shrimp
1/4 c minced ginger
Salt and pepper
1 Tb good stock, dry sherry, and/or soy sauce (opt)

Put half the oil in a large skillet, preferably
nonstick, and turn heat to high. When a bit of
smoke appears, add the leeks, all at once. Let
sit 2 of min, then cook, stirring occasionally,
for 10 min. When the leeks dry out and begin
to brown, remove them from the pan and set aside.

With the heat still on high, add the remaining
oil to the pan, immediately followed by the
shrimp. Sprinkle with the ginger. Cook 1 min,
then stir. Cook, stirring every min or so,
until the shrimp are almost all pink, about
5 min. Add the leeks, along with some salt
and pepper. When the shrimp are done (no
traces of gray will remain), stir in the
liquid if desired, taste and adjust
seasoning, and serve.
