Okay. Was, not is. Ralph's and Food 4 Less seem to differ these
days only in that the former is patronized by people who wouldn't
be caught dead in the latter, and the latter is patronized by
people who think they can't afford the former. It seems to me
from this miraculous Internet thingy that their specials are
pretty much the same (though FFL gives not as good savings) and
their brochures show that their inventories are darned similar.

Those beans are pretty nasty anyhow, and I use them generally
only in a poverty-stricken phase. Chickpeas, mmmmaybe.

Myself, I doubt I'd buy canned spinach for 1c a can. The stuff
reminds me of the slime clinging to the inside of a bag of
greens that one has forgotten for a long time.

Chickpea Tarkari
categories: Nepal, vegan, main
Yield: 1 batch

2 c chickpeas, presoaked overnight
2 c potatoes, diced
2 c onion, diced
1 c green pepper, diced
2 c tomatoes, diced
1 ts garlic paste
1 ts ginger paste
1 ts chili powder
1/2 ts turmeric
1 Tb cumin powder
1/4 ts asafetida
2 c broth or water
3 Tb cooking oil
Salt and Pepper
2 Tb chopped cilantro (for garnish) 

In a large nonstick saucepan, heat oil and fry turmeric
for 1 min. Add diced onions and green pepper; fry until
lightly browned. Add garlic, ginger and chili pastes
for 2 min over low heat. Bring heat to medium-low; add
potatoes and stir-fry for 5 min or until potatoes are
half cooked. Add cumin powder and asafetida and mix well
for a few sec. Put soaked chickpeas into the potato
mixture and give it a good stir for 5-7 min. Add
tomatoes, broth, salt and pepper; simmer 20-30 min until
the chickpeas are tender and a desired consistency of
the stew has been achieved. Garnish with chopped
cilantro. Serve hot with roti (flat bread).
