====================
Hi Michael,

ML> I just stay out of the
ML> kitchen (something that is really hard to do).
RH> Hard to do in some respects, easy to do in his kitchen. (G)

ML> The last couple visits the kitchen, though strewn with
ML> equipment, food wrappers, and above all pill bottles,
ML> has been neater, with at least half of the pots and
ML> pans showing signs of having been washed.

Maybe he's beginning to realise that it's better to wash up pots & pans
before the food debris gets too caked on and crusty? Clean up is a lot
easier when you don't have to scrub the pots for an hour to see results.

ML> I arranged to be free then, and then he changed it to 4:00.
ML> Fine, I thought, who cares if he's yanking my chain again.
RH> If he weren't family, you probably would have long ago cut ties with
RH> him. But, it's not so easy with family so I guess you just grit your
RH> teeth and bear with it.

ML> If he weren't family I would never have had ties with him.

True, but he is family so you have to make the best of the situation.

ML> But in this case we cancelled altogether, because of a
ML> mistake on my part - I'd thought that he was going to be
ML> a quick bus ride from the place I suggested, but in fact
ML> he had clearly said that he was going to be a mile away
ML> from where I thought he'd said. By the time I figured that
ML> out, it was easier just to postpone than rearrange - fine

Sometimes cancellation/postponement is better than juggling and
rejuggling schedules. I completely forgot a ladies craft night at church
last Friday--we went out for supper and a grocery run after a day of
working on the house. Not a big deal overall tho.

ML> with me, as my current state of lassitude is still
 ML> considerable and onerous.

No surprise that it's lasting so long, you did go thru quite the ordeal
there. Losing blood neant you lost hemoglobin (iron) which is a fast way
to drain your energy, just by itself. Don't push yourself, rest when
needed and get some iron pills if needed. If you're not perked up by the
end of January or so, that's the time to be concerned but I wouldn't
expect too much before then, given what all your body went thru.

ML> The sensible thing to me seems to be to spend as little time
ML> there as possible. The downside is the cost; the upside is
ML> that I mostly get to be places I like to be.
RH> It was a thought to make the time you have to spend there a bit more
 RH> bearable.

ML> I try to confine my attentions to paperwork, sleeping,
ML> and chocolate. Could be worse, could be alcohol, as the
ML> temptation to overindulge is substantial.

Probably quite tempting at times but when you look at the after effects,
you see it's not worth giving in to. How does the caffiene and all in
chocolate affect you?

RH> Newest scam out is calling you, saying "we've tried and tried calling
RH> you but couldn't reach you", then telling you, you missed jury duty.
RH> Then they ask for a good sized "fine", to be paid by a green dot card
RH> bought at Wal-Mart. Scam from the word "go"!
ML> How on earth would anyone fall for that.
RH> Elderly or others who may be a bit mentally confused. A good chance
RH> your brother would fall for something like that.

ML> He's no doubt fallen for scams but not that obvious.

Just keep an eye out for indicators that may indicate he has fallen for
a scam.

ML> Sadly, I had a friend (viola player) whose son had some
ML> condition on what is now called the autism spectrum and
ML> one of whose compulsions was to respond to every junk phone
ML> call and every piece of junk mail, giving money as
ML> requested, unquestioningly. While the parents were living
ML> within striking distance, the issue could be mitigated by
ML> intercepting the junk mail, but later on when it came time
ML> to retire to the warmth of the southland, and when the kid,
ML> an adult by this time, didn't want to go along, what to do?

That's where some sort of guardianship needs to be put into place.
Something not too obvious but with the ability to intercept the junk
mail and get it disposed of. I know, easier said than done.

 ML> FullRack Rib Rub
 ML> cat: spice, ingredient
 ML> yield: 1 c or a bit more

 ML> 2 Tb salt
 ML> 2 ts dry mustard
ML> 2 Tb freshly ground black pepper
 ML> 2 Tb brown sugar
 ML> 1 Tb chili powder
 ML> 1/4 c paprika
 ML> 2 Tb onion salt
 ML> 2 Tb garlic salt

I'd sub out garlic and onion powder, maybe kicking the salt up a bit
(but not much). Probably could use a blend of various chili pepper
powders or one specific (ancho, chipotle, etc), depending on the taste
and/or heat level desired.

Catch you later,
