================
Hi Michael,

RH> Some people like being told what's wrong with them, what is to be
RH> done, etc and just accept the doctor's word as truth. Those people are
 RH> probably his patients.

ML> I wonder if the treatment failure rates of that population
ML> differ from those of the rest of us.

Don't know but my parents like that kind of doctor. In reality, my mom
should have been on insulin years ago but the doctor just gave her oral
meds. He never asked what she was eating, suggested how to eat better or
anything like that tho I understand he did look at her numbers at every
visit. Not a doctor I'd be comfortable with.

RH> There's no lack of primary care doctors in this area, just problems
RH> finding primary care doctors who would take our insurance. For a
RH> while, we were going down to Raleigh but when she retired, we found the
RH> group in Wake Forest we're with now. Steve does a lot of his care thru
RH> the VA but I don't have that option.

ML> In my case, as the insurance is very powerful and also owned
ML> by the hospital, it cleaves all those gordian knots with ease.
ML> But why an area that churns out even more doctors than it does
ML> musicians should have a shortage of the former and a glut of
ML> the latter, that's sort of beyond me.

Tis a puzzlement indeed. You would think doctors would want to stay in a
metro area like Boston, pay off med school bills quickly. (G)

 ML> Today I needed to catch a bus at 0550, but I don't have a
ML> working alarm device - so ate a quite large amount of
ML> chocolate to disrupt my sleep. I did get the visual
ML> distortions, but interestingly the migraine did not come.
RH> Interesting that the migraine didn't come. Maybe if you'd had one more
RH> piece of chocolate, it might have.

ML> Hypothesis - when my brain had something else to focus on,
ML> the pathogenic aspect got at least temporarily crowded out.
ML> The next day I had to catch a shuttle at 0524 so did the
ML> same thing. Apparently I overdosed, as though the aura came
ML> and the migraine did not, I woke up at 0200 rather than 0500.
ML> It seems that this is becoming a less effective way of coping.

Get yourself some sort of alarm clock, even if it's on a wrist watch and
train yourself to be aware of the sound it makes going off.

 ML> I don't have the visual indicators
RH> that I'm getting one, just a bad headache that keeps getting worse
RH> until it reaches a full blown migraine.

ML> I get the pulsing jagged colored lines that look sort of
ML> like cartoon lightning bolts - my cue to mend my ways post
 ML> haste if not sooner.

Do you take a B complex vitamin? I was getting bad migraines when we
moved to Savannah so Steve suggested that. It has helped keep the number
and severity of them down.

RH> Do you have a (smart) cell phone? Even some of the not quite fully
RH> smart phones have an alarm clock feature--check it out.

ML> Fully smart? I have one that's almost fully stupid - it
ML> does virtually nothing except make phone calls, and it's
ML> so old the numbers are worn off they keys. It doesn't even
ML> reliably receive calls, though on the one occasion when I
ML> needed to use it the other day, it performed, so as far as
ML> I am concerned there's no need to replace it.

OK, it was a thought. I got my first smart phone a couple of years ago.
A few weeks ago at my QoV meeting, a friend wanted to know how to do a
quilt block so I pulled a video up from Google and we watched it. I use
it as a travel alarm/white noise machine when we travel and other
"smart" features.

ML> The computer has a nifty alarm clock feature, only it doesn't
ML> have sound any more. I like silence except in these relatively
 ML> rare situations.

Most of the time I don't do anything that where sound is needed on the
computer but have checked out some videos from time to time. It's good
to have, but not neccessary for every day use.

Catch you later,
Ruth
