ML> Anything interesting happen to you yesterday?

Having had Korean (at Seoul House) for Christmas Eve after our 5pm
Christmas Eve service at church (somewhat of a tradition for us now), we
went to Taste of Japan to wish Fu and Linh Merry Christmas, and give
them a little business on their first Christmas open... We also brought
them Christmas greetings from our son, who had called us the morning
before... :) Both of us had the salmon teriyaki bento box... his was
done medium, mine rare... Lin asked us afterwards if we preferred
having the rice under the fish or in a separate bowl... it had come this
time with the rice separate, but sometimes came with it under the
entree... We told her that there were benefits to either way, and that
it didn't matter all that much... but that maybe there was a little more
benefit to having it with (so that the sauces would go into the rice),
while our son would probably go the other way... ;) Apparently she's
still feeling like she's feeling her way with the "right way" to do
things... :) And feels comfortable enough with us to ask (nobody else
in the place at all)....

BTW, rather than be rude, when my son called, I asked him if he knew
their ethnicities, since he'd worked with them at Arigato. He was sure
that Fu is full Chinese, at least one generation past arrival, maybe
more, and that he identifies himself more as Chinese-American, and/or a
world citizen... ;) Rob wasn't sure about Linh, but thought that
Chinese from Vietnam or possibly Cambodia was likely... she also
identifies as Chinese. :) He didn't know for sure about the proper
spelling of her name... I might follow through on that sometime... ;)
He also said that if I needed to know if Linh would be offended by
something, or embarrassed by it, I should ask Fu first, and he could let
me know how (and/or whether) to ask her.

ML> Anne has 25000 cookbooks. This came up in conversation.
ML> When she was a young mother she had resolved to never make
ML> the same version of a dish twice. It didn't really work, as
ML> one does find favorites, plus kids want the same thing all
ML> the time. Both Dan and Charles do have more adventursome
ML> tastes than most, though. Funny thing is that their children
ML> do not - they have expensive but conservative preferences.

Possibly in the nature of children to rebel...? ;) Or just the hatched
a duckling phenomenon... :)

ML> We chatted pleasantly (as civilly as possible for the soon
ML> to be divorced couple), then retired to the living room for
 ML> brandy, which nobody had.

Too full...? Or just not interested in more spirits...? :)

Part 2 of Christmas for us happened on Saturday, when my little sister
MaryGrace called to invite us, spur-of-the-moment, to Rohrbach's, a
local microbrewery/pub/restaurant. I asked her what was there besides
beer, and she answered, John, Erica and the boys... (G) So we went
and joined them there, John being my youngest brother, and Erica his
gf/fiance, and his boys being of course my nephews.. :) They'd already
had a couple of orders of wings by the time we got there, and Marty
(sister's hubby) was working on an order of onion rings. MG was the
only one having beer. The onion rings were huge, probably like the ones
you described recently. A couple more orders of wings, one hot, one
herb and parm (I think), arrived shortly after we did. All were being
shared, so I had one each of the wings, and a couple of the rings...
This being suppertime-ish, we ordered a quesadilla offering... since
John was ordering the pulled pork/bbq sauce one, we ordered the chicken
one, and planned to swop out with him. They came with a goodly amount
of filling, with tomatoes and onions along with the meat and the cheese,
and accompanied by a large pile of sliced hot peppers. Marty had
ordered a roast beef on a roll with french fries, MG a version of French
onion soup called something Seven Lily (had more than just onions and
garlic, probably shallots, chives, dunno what else), and Erica the
Cobb's Hill salad (named partly for a local attraction called Cobbs
Hill, and a version of a Cobb salad). Large portions of everything... I
got a taste of the french fries, but not the sandwich, soup or salad.
I got curious about what the bar's single malt selection might be, so MG
and John checked and all they had was Glenfiddich, not bad at all, and
John bought himself and me each a glass thereof, neat. Dunno how old it
was, but it seemed smoother than usual... After hanging out there for a
couple hours, we moved the party to MG & Marty's house, to visit for
another couple hours... John and family were heading back to NYC the
next day, and weren't going to be in town this next weekend... when part
3 will occur... my family's get together... this year to be at MG's. :)
