==================
Hi Nancy,

NB> NB>> Adirondacks, either at boy scout camp (Massaweepie [(sp?) only
NB> NB>> mostly heard it said, not seen it written]) or at the Pond...

RH> Probably Don would know of it; he's an inspector for Boy Scout camps
RH> and has mentioned doing one in the Adarondacks.

NB> Probably. I slightly misspoke there... Richard's Boy Scout camp was
NB> Sabattis, while Massawepie (I was close on the spelling) was the camp
NB> for the scout troops here in the Rochester area... I was looking at a
NB> new Gazetteer I just got for NYS, and got my memory joggled... ;)

No problem, the only Boy Scout camp I knew of is the one my brothers
went to/younger brother still works at every summer the other side of
Oneonta.

NB> NB>> There was always some trying out of local foods... after all,
NB> NB>> that's how we discovered that we ALL (even Daddy) hated hominy,
NB> no NB>> matter how Mommy tried to fix it... ;)

RH> OTOH, my parents pretty much stayed with old familiar things, even
RH> when they traveled. In Germany, a lot of the cooking there was close
RH> enough to what Mom did (meat and potatoes) that it was familiar. When
RH> we were in the southwest, they didn't want to try the local Mexican
 RH> or Tex-Mex cooking.

NB> My parents were game to try new things... they hadn't had much of
NB> Chinese cooking other than the infamous LaChoy (a childhood staple
NB> "special"), but were willing to go to Yang's with us, and later, to
NB> Asian buffets with us... But they prefered to go to Olde Country...
 NB> ;)

My parents got take out occaisionally when a Chinese place opened about
25 years ago in town. To the best of my knowledge, didn't go for it
otherwise (on trips or whatever). Dad doesn't really like rice so it was
a rarity at home, usually the few times Mom made chop suey. Like your
parents, a place like Olde Country Buffet was more to their liking, or a
cheap steakhouse.

NB> one. I RH>> didn't realise how much of one I had until we were in HI
 NB> and I was RH>> questioned about it. (G)
NB> NB>> The whole four years we lived in Mississippi, we were teased
NB> about NB>> our Yankee accents... we moved up to Philly, and were
NB> immediately NB>> teased about our southern accents... ;) One just
 NB> can't win... (G)

RH> But how long did it take you to shed the accent? (G) We'd not lived in
RH> NC for 18 years when we moved to HI.

NB> I don't think I shed the accent at all.. I only picked up bits of
NB> various ones here and there, so wherever I went, I've never quite had
NB> the accent of the area... nor, really, of anywhere else in
NB> particular... I'll pick up speech patterns and vocabulary from
NB> wherever, whoever, and let them slip away as others come to the
 NB> forefront...

Steve picks up vocabulary, but not any sort of accent. Three years after
he moved to NC (the first time), we met someone from Rochester at a
conference in Kentucky. He recognised Steve's accent right away but
thought I was a native southerner (after living in NC 2 years).

NB> was up in St. Lawrence NB>> County... If there happened to be some
NB> research she could do on her NB>> family when we were in an area for
NB> mine, of course we'd work on that NB>> together, too... :)

RH> Along for the ride and any incidental information she could come
 RH> across.

NB> Pretty much... and to give me research tips along the way from her own
 NB> experiences... ;)

And did you pass any of that on to nieces or nephews?

NB> NB>> The first trip we did together, she had decided that she wanted
NB> to NB>> teach me how to do on-site research, so off we went to
NB> central PA, NB>> to courthouses, cemetaries, libraries, churches and
 NB> all... and she NB>> did a one-on-one workshop, basically... ;)

RH> Where in central PA? Must have been fun learning about the family
 RH> that way.

NB> Primarily Centre County, with a little in Huntingdon and Franklin
NB> Counties, that first trip... also a bit in Harrisburg as the state
NB> capitol. And indeed it was fun... for her, too, as I stumbled into
NB> some lovely troves of information... ;) She was quite envious of my
 NB> beginner's luck... ;)

OK, Steve's dad is from Snyder County--McClure. Some of the family still
lives there, as do the friends I made the one quilt for.

Catch you later,
Ruth
