==================
NB> Double digits is pretty nice... quadruple, not so... although I
NB> suppose for some it wouldn't make a lot of difference... ;) The trip
NB> to see Ian is similarly expensive...? Guess you may have to save up
NB> your pesos for that one... :) It'll give a little more space for
NB> reevaluating your appendix issues, too though, to wait until fall...

The appendix I've pretty much forgotten about. There's a
little twinge here and there, but even if I were in rural
France I could get myself to a respectable medical facility
in not much more time than I wasted getting to MGH.

ML> The guy currently in charge is one whom I might be said to have
ML> mentored a decade ago - read, served as a bad example for. Now
ML> he's in his thirties and an affluent airline executive; even so
ML> the price issue is relevant, partially because some of his
ML> constituency is younger and/or poorer than he.
NB> So there's some good reason to pay some attention to cost, to keep up
NB> the constituency... :) Not so much fun if some of the group are shut
NB> out because of the cost...

The event is heavily subscribed anyway with a mix of affluent
people and those for whom this is the big treat of the year.
I'm somewhere in between.

 ML> Places we discussed:
ML> Manila for the cheap, KL for a mixed experience. He threw out
ML> the suggestion of Taipei, which I liked (he works for SkyTeam,
ML> and China Airlines is based there), but it's almost as expensive
ML> as Singapore and not nearly so warm.
NB> So Taipei wouldn't be that much a better choice anyway... :)

It would be good for a change of pace is all. It's not uppermost
in people's minds as a destination, even though it has more
interesting topography (being a classic Pacific Ring of Fire
island), just as good food, and almost as good public transport.
Plus it has the greatest museum of Chinese art in the world,
thanks to Chiang's [s]banditry[/s] foresight in spiriting away
a huge number of treasures as the country fell to the Communists.

ML> No matter where it is I'll
ML> probably fly to Singapore on United, overnight at the Conrad,
ML> and then take Air Asia (if it's still in business) or another
ML> low-cost carrier for the intracontinental leg.
NB> You get the best fares for the intercontinental flight from United to
NB> Singapore...? Or just the best way to earn your frequent flyer miles
 NB> for the trip...?

The most miles for about the same number of dollars.

==
NB> And since the Singapore trip is a Do, there's lots of people to share
NB> the experience with, so it makes the splurge a little more
NB> defensible... the stalls and hawker centers sound appealing to me,
 NB> too... :)
ML> Or to go to Manila, where airfare, hotel, and
ML> food cost no more than just hotel in Singapore.
NB> Ah, so at least in Manila, the prices might be closer to much
 NB> better...

They are - and were. I felt slightly guilty about riding on
the economy fueled by the downtrodden - the national per caput
daily wage is about $3 to 5 (though the yuppies make a dozen
times that), but in this microcosmic scheme of things, there
is some trickle-down effect.

==

ML> Much hilarity amid a select group that have known each other
ML> for over a decade. I sort of regret missing the big dinner
ML> but sort of don't regret it, if you know what I mean.
NB> I totally know what you mean... one can't be two places at once, and
NB> the road not traveled one always wonders about... but the select group
NB> had its own treasures... :) Sounded like a meal I would have also
 NB> enjoyed... :)

It was a good meal. Less adventuresome than if Lilli hadn't
been there, but still quite nice and a third the cost of
what the meal with the large group would have been.

Sloppy Joes
cat: sandwich, American, Singaporean
servings: 4

4 hamburger sesame seed buns
8 strips bacon (streaky or back, up to you)
4 eggs
4 sl monterey or sharp cheddar
2 Tb bacon fat (olive oil works in a pinch)
300 g minced beef
100 g minced pork belly
1 md yellow onion, minced
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 green pepper, diced 1 cm
1 c tomato puree
1 ts cumin
2 ts brown sugar
1 Tb cider vinegar
1 ts dried thyme
1 ds cayenne
1 Tb Worcestershire
1/2 c water

1) Fry garlic and onion in bacon fat drippings until soft
and caramelised, about 5 min on medium-high heat.

2) Add peppers and fry till toasty, about 3 min.

3) Add beef.

4) Add minced pork, taking care to break them apart.

5) Add tomato puree, cumin, sugar, cider vinegar, thyme,
cayenne, and worcestershire and stir through. Add water,
and let it simmer till almost reduced. That's the sloppy
joe part!

6) In a separate pan, grill bacon till toasty.

7) Fry egg any way you like, sunny side up, or scrambled.

8) Assemble sloppy joe, layered with bacon, a slice of
cheese (the heat from the fillings will melt it through),
and an egg between toasted sesame buns.
