============================
Hi Nancy,

RH> It looks like this spring and summer will be a series of trips and
RH> home for short times between. It'll start next month, and hopefully
RH> finish by late summer. But, we're going to semi plan that we'll need
RH> another trip north at some unspecified time yet this year.

NB> Now that your dad is in the facility, y'all are going to start in on
NB> the house...? Plus, there is your mom's burial still to plan...

I think the burial will be a simple service, not much to plan but thanks
for the reminder. I need to remind Don to touch base with the pastor (or
see if Steve will do it) to start laying out basic plans. As far as the
house goes, we began a bit of it a couple of years ago but are now
moving into a serious "push to finish" phase. The majority of what I
want is small stuff, but have to put in claims for it so if overlapping
ones are made, we can decide who gets what.

NB> RH>> We're thinking this year will not be one for gardening tho.
NB> NB>> There's probably still enough unsettled that one wouldn't want
NB> to have NB>> a garden to worry about leaving on short notice.... I
NB> suppose you NB>> could still do some soil prep work, if finances and
 NB> time allow... :)

RH> First off, we have to get a soil test done. Steve also bought on
RH> markdown and clearance (or was it the other way around) a compost
RH> barrel today so I'll have to start saving scraps for it. That'll help
RH> the ground and our water bill (less use of the garbage disposal).

NB> True, the soil test would give you a better sense for what is
NB> needed... Composting almost always helps enrich the soil, though... :)
 NB> It's a
NB> good ecological practice, too... :)

The compost barrel has been started. Looks like the back yard is mostly
clay, a clay/sand mix out front. Amazingly, stuff grows, but don't know
how well veggies would do.

NB> melt on its own. NB>> Well... there are different sorts of salt that
NB> can be used... and some NB>> places use sand, for traction as well as
NB> to encourage the sun's action NB>> in melting...

RH> I think some sand is used here but not to the degree it would be used
RH> in storms up north. NCDOT seems to rely more on salt than sand, and a
 RH> lot of brining.

NB> I think sand is more used up in the North Country, ie the
NB> Adirondacks... it seems to all be salt here...

We saw a good bit of sand in the Catskills. Our car was quite dirty by
the time we got back to NC--took 2 trips thru the car wash to get it
clean.

NB> NB>> We're getting another cold snap starting tomorrow... I doubt it
NB> will NB>> be the last one... At least the trend is warming, which is
 NB> a relief NB>> in and of itself... :)

RH> We hit the low 80s today but tomorrow is supposed to be in the 60s,
RH> and 50s on Friday. But, no snow is predicted, even tho some night
RH> temps are supposed to drop to the (upper) 30s.

NB> That's way too warm for this time of year...! This weekend, temps are
NB> supposedly going to be hovering around freezing and a bit below for
NB> highs... and we had some snow in the air a little while ago, seems to
 NB> have stopped now... :)

We're too warm for snow right now but its been a yo-yo week and it looks
like next week will be the same. I'm keeping the flannel sheets on the
bed at least another week. (G)

RH> I decided to wait and cook my
RH> corned beef & cabbage tomorrow; it'll be cooler then so the house
RH> won't heat up with the stove going all afternoon.

NB> Makes sense. Our house was cool enough Tuesday that having the stove
NB> going all afternoon didn't make any problems at all.. :) We finshed
NB> the rest of the boiled dinner last night for supper...

We've got a bit left, enough for a small meal for 2 or a hearty one for
one person. We finished the Lowe's Italian sausage for lunch; that one
is worth buying again. Might check out some of the other store made ones
and see if they're as good.

NB> NB>> I knew it wasn't intended to be casserole style... but one could
NB> NB>> conceivably adapt it that direction to serve more people with
 NB> less NB>> shrimp... :)

RH> It might work, but I think I'd rather serve it with the rice they
RH> suggest or pasta. It's most authentic with rice.

NB> Of course. :) The other would be Shrimp Creole Casserole... not
NB> really the same thing... :) And not necessary for a meal for just
 NB> two
 NB> people... :)

It would need more stuff added to make it a decent casserole. I'd also
use smaller shrimp. The medium/large ones I used were good for creole
style but a rice, sauce, shrimp casserole would be better with the small
ones.

Catch you later,
Ruth
