===============
Hi Nancy,

NB> NB>> there... not outstanding, but edible anyway... Things like okra
NB> that NB>> aren't available elsewhere can make it a little more
 NB> enjoyable.. ;)

RH> We can get okra in more places than you can, naturally. (G)

NB> Well, yeah... being as you are in okra country and all that... ;)

I know, you just can't find it up north that easy. (G)

RH> But, given a choice, we'll probably not go to GC, unless the choice
RH> is Cracker Barrel. We've been disappointed there more often in our
RH> last few visits so will probably not be making it a stopping point
RH> very often in trips to come. Some things are OK, but for the most
RH> part, they've gone down hill in quality over the years.

NB> I hadn't had an experience with Cracker Barrel until the last couple
NB> of decades or so, but I've not ever been all that impressed by them...

They were better when we first tried them, probably in the early 90s but
have slipped in quality. Steve liked to order the fried chicken livers
as they were nice and tender; he says now they're as hard as rocks, like
they were frozen and to be cooked thru, had to be fried rock hard. I've
had their chicken fried steak several times (not in the last few years,
it's very high carb) and saw a drop in quality there as well.

 NB> RH>> That's when I started eating a lot of things I'd never heard
NB> about, or RH>> heard about but never had the chance to try before
NB> with Dad's lack of RH>> interest in new foods.
NB> NB>> I suspect that how one ends up "out of the nest" has less to do
NB> with NB>> what the nest was like and more with what the person is
NB> like... ;) NB>> And what they get exposed to along the way.... :)

RH> Probably a lot to that as most of my siblings aren't particularly
RH> adventurous in their tastes either. None of them has travelled like we
RH> have; a couple of them went to Italy while in high school but haven't
RH> been out of the country since. Other than Canada, I don't think either
RH> Bill or my youngest sister have been out of the country. So, they've
RH> not had the exposure to what we have in the various foods and are
RH> content to eat they way they're used to.

NB> And for all you know, even given more travel, they might still have
NB> been the sort not to be trying the "dangerous local cuisine",
 NB> either... ;)

Wouldn't surprise me in the least if they had that sort of reaction. (G)

NB> RH>> And start surveying things, getting an idea of how things will
NB> work RH>> out for August. Will we need to bring sleeping bags,
NB> spices, etc? NB>> I'll be starting the "survey" when I go up in May
NB> for the spring board NB>> meeting... :) Sleeping bags, only if you
NB> need extra blankets for NB>> warmth (but you'll probably have them
NB> from your VT trip anyway?), as NB>> linens are provided in the
NB> cottage. Spices... probably a good idea, NB>> especially for
NB> anything not basic... I don't think those are part of NB>> the
NB> furnishings, although Linda wouldn't mind lending hers,
 NB> NB>> probably.. ;)

RH> OK, it's time to start making my mental lists. Bring spices, basics
 RH> like oil, vinegar, mayo..................

NB> The latter, yes, you'd need to bring, as food is not supplied for
NB> us... that's all our responsibility... :) This picnic, Linda might
NB> be more a part of than last, since her husband Gene is no longer with
 NB> us...

I'm thinking for VT as well; we (our church) supplies the meals. The
supper ones will need more basics like spices, mayo, vinegar, etc as we
will be doing more cooking. Breakfast will be grab and go sort of stuff,
lunch will be sandwiches and simple sides like chips. Supper will be the
only really cooked meal.

Catch you later,
Ruth
