ML>> be back in Boston in a couple months to discuss
 ML>> things with the optometrist.
NB>> By then, any getting adjusted should have pretty much worked itself
NB>> out, and what's left might be errors or unfixables...
ML> I don't want unfixables and errors! Turns out there are
ML> some issues regarding certain eye-brain relations that have
ML> been made worse, especially when I'm tired, such as now.

Errors at least can be fixed... hopefully... ;) I guess I can sorta
understand why being tired could make the eye-brain issues worse... when
one is tired, things don't function as well anyway... and things in flux
could easily become more confused...

ML> I know it's early in the morning, but I didn't get to bed
 ML> until 0400.

I can certainly relate to that one... ;)

ML>>> plus there are prismatic effects (colors resolving
ML>>> into primaries - i.e., stuff like green becoming
ML>>> bands of blue and yellow - when I am not looking
ML>>> straight in front of me).
NB>>> That might be something to do with the lenses themselves...
ML>> Could indeed. One of the questions I will ask.
 NB>> Good idea. :)
ML> Funnily, in these couple weeks, though the phenomenon
ML> persists, it's only there there when I decide to notice
ML> it. Rest of the time it's only sort of there.

Like my haloes in low-light situations... sounds like there's at least
some accommodation being made in the eye-brain connection to let you be
able to mostly ignore it... :)

ML>> It's beginning - the optimal focal distances for various
ML>> things have worked out, and a proper adjustment of the
ML>> position of the glasses (difficult until the nosepieces
ML>> get fixed in July) clears up the appropriate field and
 ML>> blurs out others!
 NB>> Progress. :)
ML> Some. But I'm not getting used to being able to read
ML> fine print almost at arm's length and not when it's
ML> closer by. I wonder what my effective focal distance
ML> actually is now for reading. It's said I'm better than
 ML> 3 diopters now, which I haven't been since the 1950s.

Maybe they can do some figuring/experimenting to figure out what your
focal distances are for whichever... Having to hold it at almost arm's
length sounds like what most people go through before correction as
their eyes get into the aging business... so maybe there's something
that can be done to correct it further...

NB>>> Good advice... :) After the cataract surgery, I was told it could
NB>>> take even longer to get used to some things... I still see the edges
NB>>> of the new implanted lenses when I'm in low light...
ML>> So will this persist, or will your eyes or brain
ML>> adjust and censor this out?
NB>> The first answer I was given was that the eyes/brain should adjust.
ML> For example, I read "catarack" and actually had to go
ML> back to verify that u cld spel after all. Closing the
ML> eyes for a few seconds helps a bit.

I'm as prone to typoes as anyone else... though I usually catch them on
the fly and fix them... ;) But I find my eyes trying to see the wrong
letters sometimes too...

ML> The eyes/brain adkusting thing (oh, there I go again)

Typos happen. (G)

ML> was part of the song and dance both the ophthalmologist
ML> and optician gave me at the hospital. Unfortunately, my
ML> brain ain't what it used to be, and my eyes never were.

Yeah, I know... they promise the moon... and then can't deliver... after
all, it IS the moon... (G)

NB>> But when it persisted, the answer I got was that sometimes it doesn't
NB>> just get censored out, but that eventually, the edges should get more
NB>> cloudy and not be so distracting... I'm not sure how encouraging that
 NB>> really is... ;)
ML> If you're keen on noticing things, not so much, but one
ML> makes compromises in one's old age, doesn't one.

One does. One certainly does... ;)

ML> Tomorrow, Sunday, I have a flight that leaves before the
ML> public trans does, so I was going to do the SuperShuttle
ML> thing, but my brother suggested that we do the arrangement
ML> we'd done before - I pay him to drive me in the amount
ML> that I'd spend on the common carrier. In a moment of
ML> weakness I agreed (the kid says I'll have to wake him, a
ML> bad thing, as he doesn't wake up fully for hours).

Apparently it worked without too much undue angst... I note from later
messages you seem to have made your connection at any rate... ;)

ML>>> than the 3 to 3.5 oz they are; also, I could discern
ML>>> now by sight the bready filler.
 NB>>> Oh, dear... ;(
ML>> Always was able to by taste, anyhow.
NB>> True... now you just have the confirmation... ;)
ML> Visual confirmation of real experience? Nah.

Somewhat a pale addition to the repertoire...? :)

ML>> Funny thing. A nonzero number of friends have suggested
ML>> that I would be frightened off by them once I actually
ML>> was able to see what they actually looked like. So far
 ML>> that has not happened.
NB>> Were they serious...? perhaps, insecure...?
ML> Sort of jokey, like old Bodle (before your time) saying
ML> that he was so ugly falling objects avoided his head.
ML> But these jokes are based in insecurity.

That's about what I figured.... :) I know about the insecurity based
jokes... ;)

 ML> Not a good tendency: I say I'm ugly/stupid/clumsy to
ML> forestall the pain of having other people say it.

Thereby sometimes self-inflicting pain when perhaps nothing would have
been said, or even thought... I had a friend that used to chant the
limerick (probably by Ogden Nash?):
As a beauty I'm not a great star
There are others more handsome by far
But my face I don't mind it
   Because I'm behind it
It's the people in front that I jar...
He said it so often, I memorized it. (G) Granted, he didn't have a
prettyboy face, more a cragginess... but he was good enough looking, for
sure... I know he was insecure... He also used to joke about his
superiority complex that was covering up for his inferiority complex
that was covering up for (and so forth)...

ttyl neb
