Ärende: sticky situations
=========================
Hi Dave,

DD> I use so little powdered milk that I still have over half of the
DD> container of powder I got from the UDSA Commodities give-away back in
 DD> the 1980s.

RH> Only thing I got from the give aways then was 15 pounds of a velveeta
RH> like cheezoid product. Couldn't freeze it so we used it up as fast as
RH> we could. Some months later Steve went into the army and we got off
RH> food stamps, never to get the government give aways again. Milk powder
RH> probably would have been used as fast as the cheezoid but been more
 RH> appreciated.

DD> Odd, we had 5# bricks of "American" cheese -- in actuality, a mild
DD> Cheddar (style) cheese. It was quite good for cooking with or snacking

I think it depended on what was available in what region of the country.
Eastern NC got the poorer end of the stick on that one.

DD> with Ritz crackers and milk. A guy I knew from the coffee crowd at a
DD> local hang-out was a truck driver --- and he got nailed for selling a
DD> *LOT* of the bricks of cheese to restaurants, etc. He was a guest of
DD> Uncle Sugar at the Terre Haute (IN) FCI for a couple of years. And has
DD> been known since his release as "Chucky Cheese".

And has he kept squeaky as cheese curds clean since then?

DD> Fortunately it doesn't spoil and I keep it in a Tupperware container -
DD> to keep the weevils and such out. I also have a saltine or two in
DD> there to absorb excess humidity.

RH> Just remember to change out the crackers from time to time.

DD> Every time I unseal the lid. Otherwise moisture in the air has scant
 DD> opportunity to affect things.

It can,, even with Tupperware, as I've found out over the years. Then,
too, I've lived in some more humid climates than you.

RH> Steve ordered some metal forms for making burrito wrappers into taco
RH> salad bowls--we made them for this week's meal for Life Group. We got

DD> I had, at one time, a pair of nesting round mesh baskets (like French
DD> fry baskets for a stove-top fryer) which worked well for that. I used
DD> them so seldom that I have long since passed them along.

RH> I've seen them but these are good for baking the wrapper, instead of
RH> frying it. Much less grease and mess involved.

 DD> And less taste, too.

Enough taste that the group enjoyed them. Steve spritxed the wrappers
with oilve oil spray after fitting them into the forms and before baking
them. That added a bit of taste.

RH> sundries. We do not get coffee or tea there, as we've other brands we
 RH> prefer.

DD> I find that their Beaumont coffee is as good (or better) than Folger's
DD> Classic Roast. My preferred is still bean coffee mixed 1/3 dark roast,
DD> 1/3 Columbian and 1/3 French roast, ground just before brewing. But,
DD> my Scottish ancestors spin in their mausoleums every time I spend that
 DD> much money on coffee.

RH> Think they would appreciate Aldi's then? My parents shopped at one in
RH> Kingston, NY years ago, first time I'd heard of them. Over the years,
RH> they drifted away from doing most of their shopping there, probably
RH> because of the bag it yourself policy of the store.

DD> As long as they could get along with Germans. Bv)=

Both of my folks are of direct German ancestry; they had no problem with
Aldi's being a German company. OTOH, my dad wasn't too thrilled with our
SIL's Mitsubishi Eclipse as he was strafed by Mitsubishi planes in the
Pacific Theater during WWII.

DD> I have a couple of those nice light-green shopping totes made from
DD> recycled (something) that I bought at ALDI for a buck a pop. Being
DD> single they suffice for most of my shopping. But one time I was

We've got a good assortment of tote bags, recycled, canvas, etc. Most of
them are in the car, except when we use them at the market or Aldi's or
wherever and bring them into the house. Then we have to remember to
bring them back out to the car. (G)

DD> standing on line with my few items, waiting for the customers ahead of
DD> me to check out. All had at least one heaped-full trolley and a couple
DD> had two (or more) carts full to
DD> overflowing. I was muttering about "no express line" when a light went
DD> on in my head and a little voice said "Remember where you are".

Almost tempting to "reverse shop" and come back another day or time?

Catch you later,
Ruth
