Hi Nancy,
NB> NB>> decided to go with the unknown (to me)... :) So, Burger Bar it
NB> is, NB>> this Thursday... ;)
RH> OK, so we'll see a report later this week.
NB> Yup... ;) Here 'tis... We did go... It's an interesting place...
NB> you place your orders at the register, pay for them, find a place to
A no frills place or does it have any sort of "ambiance" other than
maybe big screen tvs tuned to sports channels. (G)
NB> sit
NB> (inside or outside), and they are delivered to you when ready... The
NB> burger choices had 3 different specialty 1/2 pound beef burgers, one
NB> 1/4 pound beef burger, all with various sorts of cheese, but also a 6
NB> oz
NB> turkey burger, a 6 oz lamb gyro burger, a 6 oz bison burger, and a
NB> couple of veggie burgers (a grain and a black bean)... One was
NB> allowed to make substitutions... they were served on either a toasted
Nice that substitiutions are allowed, making for a custom creation of
one's chosing. The one size fits all, like in every thing else, fits
only a small percentage of people.
NB> sesame
NB> brioche roll, a toasted whole wheat roll, or a toasted classic bun
NB> (for the 1/4 pounder), or one could go bunless if desired. Come-withs
NB> were
NB> either Tuscan fries (french fries with herb seasoning), salad or soup,
NB> or for an extra dollar zucchini fries, sweet potato fries or onion
Could you gt the zuchinni fries with the Tuscan seasoning?
NB> rings. Also available were a number of interesting sandwiches, also
NB> on the same rolls and buns, or on a toasted Italian roll or ciabatta
NB> bread, and coming with the same sides... Or you could have one of the
NB> salads, entree size, instead of burgers or sandwiches... Baby kale
NB> and Arugula salad, Grilled Cobb salad, Caesar salad or Mediterranean
NB> salad... to
NB> which one could add chicken, salmon, or scallops, for a sum... ;)
NB> Soups are also available in an entree size, but it's "Chef's
NB> Selection,
NB> Inspired by the season", so I don't have any details on them.. ;)
To be discovered on the next trip, I presume?
NB> Since it's separate from the grocery store (although one can walk in
NB> from the store, like from a mall), they also offer beer, wine and
NB> "spiked shakes"... Didn't try any of those, although the Ultimate
NB> Chocolate looked interesting... But they also have soft serve custard
NB> in chocolate, vanilla, or twist, and make vanilla or chocolate shakes
NB> and a root beer float (from Saranac Root Beer)... and have a couple of
NB> the computerized Coke product dispenser machines there... also bottled
NB> water... and one can always buy a drink in the store and bring it in,
NB> if one wanted something not readily available in the restaurant
NB> area...
IOW, if you go thirsty, it's your own fault.
NB> I ordered the Maple Onion Bacon Burger, 1/2 pound beef burger, aged
NB> (white) cheddar, smoked bacon, maple onion jam, chipotle aioli on a
NB> toasted sesame brioche roll... just as listed, without any changes,
NB> and was able to order it rare, which is how it came... :) Tasted
NB> quite
NB> nice as a unit, and also each part, when I deconstructed it near the
NB> end of the first half, to try each separate taste... didn't taste much
NB> maple, but the jam, actually more like a relish, was nice enough... I
Maple syrup? Maybe they should have used a different grade--a darker
variety with more taste.
NB> had it with the onion rings, and they were nicely done, thick-cut
NB> natural slices in a nice batter... probably done from scratch there.
NB> And, in the interests of proper tastings, I got the chocolate shake,
NB> too, which also was nicely done. :)
Quality control--got to make sure it's there for all products. (G)
NB> Linda had a special-of-the-day sandwich, a crab cake on the sesame
NB> brioche roll, with some sort of aioli and fixings... I had a bit of
NB> the crab cake, which had fallen from her roll, and it was quite tasty,
NB> and a good sized piece of real crab with not a lot of filler to hold
If it's that good, I think I'd want it on a plate, with a fork. Don't
want the taste to be muted by bread.
NB> together. She had it with the Tuscan fries, which I also had a taste
NB> of... also nicely done.. :) She started out by asking for a box to
NB> take home part, before even embarking on the eating... she put half of
As a general rule, I split my entree before starting to eat it, and
sometimes even add to the take home part (from what I thought I'd eat
all of).
NB> the sandwich away at that point, but ended up talking herself into
NB> eating the whole thing after all (she wasn't going to be going right
NB> home and decided to worry about whether it would be safe to try to
NB> keep the crab unrefrigerated that long)... She instead packed away
NB> most of
NB> the fries, and eventually (as we did sit there and talk for a while),
NB> went and got the ice cream that she'd been going to save the room for
NB> by only having half the sandwich... :) A small bowl of Chocolate
NB> soft-serve custard with crushed almonds on it... decent size for just
NB> a small, I
NB> had to ask her which size that was... ;)
I'd have made sure I didn't eat the second half of the sandwich,
tempting as it might be, save the calories and carbs for the ice cream.
It's one of the "tricks" for keeping the diabetes in line but still
enjoying some of life's goodies.
NB> The portions were big enough that I was seriously considering packing
NB> up half of mine to take along with me... especially since I was going
NB> to be missing supper, since I was heading down to Bloomfield to stay
NB> with
NB> Mommy for the evening... instead, since we took long enough talking,
NB> I finished it up there, and didn't need anything for supper... ;)
Amazing, how much you can eat when you take it slow. (G)
NB> Looks like it should work out pretty well for a 4th Sunday group
NB> choice, some month... :)
Sounds like a winner.
NB> NB>> A special place for a special anniversary... :) How was it...?
RH> Did you see the write up I posted to Michael? Brought home enough left
RH> overs for 2 more meals so it was well worth it. Neither of us had ever
RH> had chateaubriand before, now we have.
NB> Yup, saw the report, and commented on it directly already... :)
I saw.
RH> And I'll post the results as we try the different things. I'm doing
RH> another apple crisp for the church picnic this coming Sunday so will
RH> try another non wheat alternative to the flour. I'm also going to make
RH> a broccoli salad.
NB> I figured you'd probably do them both... :) It'll be interesting how
NB> the different non-wheat "flours" work or not... :)
I used an all purpose gluten free flour mix and it worked out much
better. Last time there was a lot of juice in the pan, this time there
was hardly any. I'll probably stay with the AP/GF flour as my "go to"
for that recipe, have to make note of it in the cook book (More with
Less).
NB> NB>> And we could have another side by side that I could actually
NB> taste NB>> both sides of, potentially... ;) I think that if Brooks
NB> had cider NB>> vinegar in the bottled version of their marinade it
NB> should have
